*edit* question updated further down in post #6, to bring it inline with the new adapters.

Still waiting for the supposed new iMacs, but I'm not sure how much longer I can wait. :) Whether I buy now, or later, I can't decide on display adapter.

The 24" iMac has the option of :

Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce8.html
or
ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT http://ati.amd.com/products/mobilityradeonhd2400xt/specs.html

I will be gaming on the Mac, can anyone tell me which is 'best' - I'm a programmer and not an expert on hardware :)

The HD bit of the ATI sounds appealing - but I think people rate nvidia GPUs more??

Thanks.

If I were to buy a current model iMac (and will likely if they do not have an update before my tax refund arrives), I'd go with the nVidia chipset as they seem to be further along with their OpenCL support, which will be key for Snow Leopard.

the ATI 2400XT is pretty much bottom of the barrel

ive never heard of the GS version of the 8800, so i cant comment on that, if its anything like the GT or GTS its probably around mid-range at this point, but should still be good enough for gaming for the next little while.

Now the new iMacs are out I need to re-ask the question.

Now the choice is
NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512MB
or
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB

The Apple site makes the ATI seem the better buy, but I though Nvidia was supposed to make better gfx cards than Ati?
