wooden

The metal one isn't that nice to look at, to my eyes. The holes impinge on the actual site content making it looks fuzzy and un focused, where as the wood sort of fades away so you can concentrate on what you have actually written.

Just at quick glance I like the appearance of the wooden but it seems a bit odd behind the metallic bits. Simply for coherence I like the metal, even with the holes but it's not as clear.

(sorry, I'm not a big help)

I'd go for a solid colour similar to the wood as a background.

The winks at Apple, like copying their menu bar or using the MacPro mesh always strikes me as terribly cheesy. Even though I use Macs it can actually put me off a website, because I think there is a lack of originality and it is too derivative.
