Hi all,
my 10yo son will get an Apple Pencil for our new 12.9” Pro tomorrow, and he will need something to draw in. My 6yo daughter will probably use it, too. I would buy Procreate, but I’m afraid that its complex. Are there any good drawing apps that are easy and fun to use for kids? Or should he just learn how Procreate works, as it seems to be the best app available? It ideally supports importing images they can color or clone.
They are no drawing experts or anything, but waste immense amounts of paper and toner of our laser printer lol.

thanks!

Learning procreate when they are 10 will be a huge plus for their potential skill boost or even career boost. Just buy Procreate and throw them into a sea of advanced features, and they can mess around as much as they want.

My kids get their own base iPads to use for that stuff. They’d muck up my iPad Pro. Plus have to disable their ability to load apps or in app purchases. Too much of a pain to do on mine. Plus no YouTube.

Well. Yeah, but the 9.7“ Pro they use is ancient now and I don’t want to buy the old pencil at this point. Usage will be limited to a table in our living room. Maybe another ipad with pencil 2 support will be added to our collection at some point

Stopped using Procreate regularly a long time ago. Ibis Paint is a much more capable app and the brushes installed by default are brilliant. It is easy to use and kids will love the library of brushes and materials available. Has several quirks and I still eventually use Clip Studio for the final draft and serious projects, but if I had to choose my favorite of the non-subscription based drawing apps on iPad, it is Ibis.

There is a completely free to use ad-supported version too with a majority of the brushes unlocked I believe.

During a visit pre-pandemic, I had a 5-year old family member use my iPad with Procreate and was delighted how intuitive the experience was for them. There was much giggling. It was such a joy to watch them discover and create, and give hints here and there.

Just wanted to say, that my son isn’t too happy. I’m totally addicted and started drawing like a kid in elementary school haha.
Procreate is insane value for the price and very good. He (we) will have tons of fun with it. 👍🏻

Hard to say what might hook him, but one idea is to start with a dark background and show him how to use the Nebula tool (it's under Luminance). He can press down to have them expand, and then use the undo button to start over. Just a thought ...

I was thinking son might not be happy because parent is hogging the iPad 🤣.
