200GB Seagate 7200rpm 80GB 8MB cache, USB2 AND firewire

I got it for $120 american.

That's a better deal than anything you are looking
at here! I got it brand new from eBay, but I think newegg or
tigerdirect had prices almost as nice.

Seagates are great and I recommend them,
but I have to recommend getting firewire in
addition to USB, because it is a nicer and
faster transfer if you are doing things like
backup of your system. For video it is
DEFINITELY better to have firewire than usb.

Portable hard drives are always nice, but you probably don't need that being that this will be for your iMac. So, in this case, I'd say get the Segate. They are a reliable brand from my experience. :)

THe info on most of it is very short and not detailed. Thought it would be easier to provide links...

You're too lazy to check the links, but you
aren't too lazy to post a response that is
no help at all? Sweet.

If you do end up doing using the drive
for video, you will want the 300 for sure.

For my needs, the 200 is fine.

Remember, FIREWIRE!!!!

USB and FW are measured differently, but USB allegedly transfers data at 480mbps and FW at 400mbps, but USB uses the CPU as the controller and thus uses more system resources than FW. I believe that USB is also measured at "peak throughput" where FW is "average throughput" which makes a big difference.

Choose a drive that is both USB and FW that uses the Oxford 911 chipset. It is the most reliable chipset available and is Mac bootable so you can boot from it - if you clone your internal drive to it using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

Getting a drive that is both FW and USB also gives you the option of which to use. If your FW goes out, you can still use the drive through USB.

480mbps for USB 2.o
400mbps for firewire

BUT

Firewire is a reliable streaming transfer
where USB has a high peak speed, but
it can't do long transfers as quickly.

edit: oops, already been said! So fast you are!

figured I would post this in here instead of starting a new post (not trying to hi-jack your thread).

I usually buy external drives (lacies, which I love).I was considering buying an internal drive and putting it in an external case. Are there any con's to doing this and can anyone suggest what is the best way to go about doing this? If it is safer to already buy a built external drive, then I would rather do that. But working with music, I'm constantly filling up hard drives. Gets kind of expensive to keep buying 250 gb hard drives every few months..

Thanks...
