quick explanation i've got a fantom drive FireWire CD burner (actually a Lite-On but thats what fantom used) and i asked if it was possible to use the case w/DVD burner their response was:

Yes, just match the initial settings on the back of the first drive.

so now i've got an amazing variety of choices and prices (not going to say that money's no object but . . . a gold turd is still a turd)

the only thing i really plan on doing w/drive is burning dvd movies (that play in regular dvd players), audio cd's, the occasional mp3 cd, etc. yes, yes, yes, i'm aware of the copyright crap but i have the originals

if you were in my situation which selection would you make?

I've got the Lite-On 1733S that I've been using in an external case (been using on both Mac & PC) and haven't had any problems with it. I'm using 10.4.3 and it recognized it no problem and I haven't burned a single coaster on either platform.

I just got this LaCie double layer burner for Christmas. Just the one I asked for.

I haven't tested it very much so far, but it seems very good. Should be a good and inexpencive burner.

That's the one I've got and it works very well (edit it's a NEC 3500 inside) with everything I've shoved at it so far.
iApps work fine with it and Toast (which it came with) is your best friend (well could be).
If your looking at doing the internal to external thing I'd go with a NEC drive but it's all up to you. I like the LaCie and updates for the drive seem to come out as needed.
Enjoy whatever you get ;)

..just to add to all the replies about the Lacie writers they come with mac compatible software like Toast. Awesome software, that might be another thing to look for.

I replaced my old Superdrive with the newer Pioneer model and love it. It does everything I ask of it. I already had Toast so I didn't need any more. It's cheap too. I think I paid $50 shipped.
I wouldn't mind one of those lightscribe burners from HP or Lacie though......

LaCie is over priced trash, and Pioneer is also 2nd rate now , the 110D series has gotten some bad reviews. The best pure burner is the NEC ND-3550A you can buy it at newegg.com for about $39.00. It's best to buy a 5.25 external case for the drive then all you have to do in the future is just swap drives if you are going external.

i do appreciate the replies, guess i didn't explain the situation clearly i have the fantom drive just gonna strip the CD burner out of it and replace w/DVD burner which will also burn cd's so i'll have an extra CD burner that i can either sell/trade or stick in frankenmac, i've gotten some other thumbs down on lacie drives but that was years ago . . . . gotta admit the Lite-On that fantom stuck in this case has been absolutely flawless but CD only heard pioneer made a good drive now i wonder . . . regarding NEC i was at newegg and they had the NEC as an OEM drive for around $40, a retail one for roughly $50 and a refurbished one in the $60 range . . . . they were all the same drive . . . . does anyone understand this pricing structure?

I bought a Pioneer DVR-109, which works perfectly in place of my DVR-103/A03 or whatever that was originally in my PowerMac.

You could probably get one much cheaper than I did and it would be a good replacement for the drive you have.

OEM = No Box , Manual , just the Drive in Bubble wrap. buy this one.

Retail = comes with everything , waste of money

Refub = do not buy

when it comes to optical drives I would not buy a refurb. everyone buys OEM drives on newegg as windows or OS X w/ Patchburn will detect the drive with out any other software needed.
