My Maxtor 250gb hard drive is nearly full up and I was just about to purchase a 500gb lacie until i read a number of horror stories on the web about this drive being very unreliable. Now I don't know which way to go with it should i buy a smaller capacity drive or maybe an internal for my ageing 450ghz sawtooth powermac?

maby throw in a few torrents and you've got a perfect mix! :p

No.. on a serious note, I think the best cost to storage ratio is 250gigs. I don't know if this is true with external harddrives, but it is with internal. I would recommend building an external drive. I got some amazing deals at outpost.com a while back. I think there was a deal for a 300gig hdd for $100. You could get two of those for much less than a single 500gig drive.

I am currently using a Lacie 320GB big disk extreme and I have been very happy with it so far. Nice and quick over FW800.
