Which external drive (Mac or PC ) are you using to store your files for ATV?

Also, would you recommend yours to others?

I am using a Western Digital Mybook 500GB

It has Firewire 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces.

The model # is WD5000D032-000

Western Digital makes My Books in several flavors.

I am happy with this one, I have seen lower priced units and some of them I would not buy. I also have read reviews on different WD My Books and you get what you pay for. There are some complaints of slower performance in the less expensive models.

Even the cases are different. Mine is more substantial and it has a continuous rubber edge around the case that minimizes slipping around when bumped. The lower models do not have this.

I was considering a WD My Book that is 1 Terabyte - it has 2 physical 500 Gig drives and you can put them in Raid 1 or Raid 0. But reading reviews of those have me reconsidering.

Bottom line, I would recommend the model I have but warn you to research any others first.

I have used the WD My Book Premium and Essential. I have also used the WD HD that came out of my old Gateway PC and added the Rocket Fish Enclosure. Waiting on Time Capsule now.

im using a 500 gig my book...love it...starts by itself everyonce in a while while the computer is sleeping....but i am using it as my main hard drive for information...programs go on the computers hard drive...altogether...awesome unit

Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 500GB USB 2.0.

I have 4 of them and would recommend it without hesitation. They go on sale at various larger stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.) every few months, and you can pick one up for ~ $130 USD.

I have one of those Lacie designed by F.A. Porsche, it's okay. works. 500Gb is.. well... 500Gb.

''I use 3 cURRENTLY, two WD Mybook Drives a 500gb and a 750gb, and another 400gb external. I got a deal on a 500gb Seagate external I'll be adding to the mix soon.

The Recent Mybooks have been cheaped somewhat they are much smaller in a more compact case

I have the same model. However, I don't fully trust it. My husband set it up and since the first day I plugged in it gave me an error about a corrupt drive.

Right now I'm using a Fantom G-Force 1TB Megadisk. It has FireWire800, FireWire400, and USB 2.0 interfaces. It works great, and I was able to snag one off of eBay for $250. It's RAID 0 though, which makes me very, very nervous of the consequences of a failure. So my plan is to get the Guardian Maximus enclosure found here:

...and then put in 2 1TB drives and use it as a Raid 1 device, which will go a long way in easing my concern.

I'm using a limewire technology unRAID that currently is over 5 TB in storage space. I've been pretty pleased overall with the technology though the fact that each drive is a separately mounted volume is a little annoying. The data protection however has been key.

Looks pricey!

The setup I'm thinking about should run about $600 and should meet my needs, for a little while at least.

Anybody try the Drobo? http://www.drobo.com

It's interesting to me. The only thing I don't like is that it's USB only.

So that brings up another question....is USB enough? My current drive is running Firewire 400, but is that significantly faster than USB?

Well why didn't you return it if " since the first day " it gave you an error?

Mine has run flawlessly, but if it didn't, I know how to exercise warranty return rights.

i am using a 500Gb iOmega drive, it s kinda bulky and not so pretty but it s worked like a charm, i have no complain so far at all.. totally worth th 99 bucks i paid for it..

I second this.
I have 2 of them and they've been great.

Ditto for me. USB2 only version. It's a bit slow, but works just fine when streaming. It's filling up quick though - will need something bigger soon.

500gb my book for music/music videos and podcats
500gb my book for TV shows
250gb western digital in an external case for movies. Works flawlessly. All under USB 2.0

Coming out of sleep when using the appleTV is a little slow but expected with harddrive spin and over the G network. I have been very happy with them overall.

I agree too.

I also use SEAGATE 500 Gig External hard drive. I love it. I Got rid of the Western Digital in favor for Seagate. The western digital's were very slow and unresponsive compared to Seagate.

I'm saying this from first hand experience.

Anybody try the Drobo? http://www.drobo.com

I like the setup of the DROBO, but only thing I don't like is the price tag. $500 is alot for a box that only has the "features" it has and comes with no drives whatsoever. The fact that I would have to buy drives at the same time as the DROBO is what has turned me off from it.

They also have another device now called DroboShare which will allow you to connect it to your network, but even that add-on device is another $200. Nice product, but just too pricey in my opinion.

I am currently using a WD MB Pro with 2 TB. Works great for me, and its plugged in via Firewire 800.

Got the same one. It's a great drive. Got a 500GB and a 320GB one.
