I have the same iMac than you, and I can only recommend you a LaCie D2 Quadra Hard Drive (Firewire 400, 800 and USB). I have 2 of those HD and they work perfect for Time Machine backups and just usual storage space.

I use two WD MyBooks, one is Firewire and the other USB. The USB is used to backup with TimeMachine. The Firewire is used for video scratch disk and video storage.

To come back to my LaCie D2 Quadra hard drive : one is connected as firewire 800 for my Time Machine backup up and the other as 400 for my music, movies and etc... collection.

Whatever you do, if you have a Mac, you should choose your external hard drive with a firewire port. It makes a huge difference in reading and writing compared to USB 2.

I had a Western Digital, and after a few month, I discovered that there was "holes" in the disk. As such everything worked fine, but when I would be looking for a file, it would not be there. I got it checked by an expert and he confirmed my issue.

Before that, I had Freecom hard drive and thats really bad. I had 2 different ones, and within a few month they physically smoked and burnt. But there design are nice.

I've always bought WD MyBook drives and have been very pleased with them. I recently picked up a 1TB Studio edition and its been great.

Just got one a couple of days ago, and it is indeed a great drive (i.e., really quiet + fast). Plus it's got an eSATA connector, which might end up being useful. I've also got a couple of MyBook Pros.

I got a Toughdrive to go with mine. I like it because it needs no external power supply. The thing to remember with HDs is that they have moving parts, so you should expect them to die during the life of the iMac. I think it doesn't matter what you get (apart from size issues which may matter for you) so long as you bear in mind the likely need to replace it during your iMac's life. You might want to think about sound issues too because you tend to leave it on while the iMac is on because Time Machine is doing its thing every hour.

My Western Digital was built in plastic. LaCie Hard Drive are heavy but built all with metal. They are basically tanks. You can drop them and they will be fine. Not only they have a lot of storage space but they are a good size so it makes them still portable.

I think WD are cheaper than LaCie so it all depends of your budget and how reliable you want it to be. LaCie won some Design Awards for there products. You should check them out.

I am not saying that LaCie are the best but I have very good experience with them and I recommend them.

WD My Book studio. Pre-formatted for Mac and silent as a mouse. Just remember to connect and power the drive before connecting to the Mac.

Theres a Lacie 1tb hard drive on macmall for around 265 has a various amount of ports go check it out!
