Which external USB-C harddisk case?

I've ordered an iMac 2017 with a 512gb SSD and want to use an external harddisk case for additional storage. I assume that an external case with USB-C and a SSD drive is the way to go.

Any recommendations whats a good case with fast transfer rates?
 
Both of these look good.

I am about to order the same config iMac as you and am probably going to get the Satechi which is readily available and reasonably priced here in Japan.

Both of these support TRIM passthrough.

You won't be able to run TRIM with these since they are still using USB. If you are in Windows, you can run the SCSI UNMAP command and that will be the equivalent of TRIM, but macOS does not support this. There still does not seem to be any way to get TRIM to work over USB in macOS.

Thanks, WB! Long time no speak.

Actually, I didn't buy it yet so thanks for the heads up. I guess I'll look for another Thunderbolt enclosure or else get a USB-C to Thunderbolt adapter for my trusty old Delock 42490.

Is TRIM supported in a TB enclosure?
 
how is the speed of the SSD in a USB-C enclosure compared to the internal SSD?

Any of these USB externals we are talking about will be limited to 400MBps or so due to the SATA interface. The iMacs use a PCIe interface (I don't think the iMacs are on NVMe yet), so you can expect to see easily 3X that on the internal.
