I've sold my Mac, I'd like to know which files/folders should i securely delete? This is so the buyer cannot get into my personal custom settings i.e. passwords for MacRumors??

Any suggestions for a quick method apart from format HD?

Why don't you want to format? I suggest formatting and reinstalling the OS.

Data can still be recovered from a regular format HD right? I'd rather secure delete the important files. I've done that with my business files and would like to do the same with the other important files too just for piece of mind u know?

Well, in that case do a six or seven-pass format (I believe it's a security option in Disk Utility)

When installing, you can choose to do a secure erase of the entire disk. You can write all zeros to the disk, much more secure than trying to erase individual files etc. It will just take some time do do the erase, so be prepared
