Which firmware should I upgrade to before re jailbrekaing my 3G?

Tried searching around for answers, but I'm not having much luck. I'm on a 3G, running 3.0 firmware on a windows machine. All I really want is the MMS update in 3.1.

I understand there have been issues with battery life with 3.1.2? What should I do, upgrade to 3.1 and blackrain it?
If so where should I go to get the 3.1 upgrade? Doing it officially through itunes doesn't seem like an option. Is there a restore file to download?

Or am I wrong, and can go ahead and upgrade to 3.1.2 and run blackrain on it?

Thanks. Now, does it matter what order I do this in? the restore to get my data back, or jailbreak?

Hmm, looks like I may have downloaded the wrong one for MMS. I downloaded 3.0.1 and not 3.1? is that not listed there?

Hmmmm, looks like 3.1 isn't available. Just get 3.1.2.
