Hi-
I am planning to go to Spain/France/Portugal next month. I plan on purchasing an iPOD so I can mostly use SKYPE for cheap calls home (the whole buying a phone with GSM unlocked and such is a bit confusing for me so i am shying away from that, hopefully my hotels/hostels/cafes will have cheap or free internet access). Maybe also download a language translator.

I don't need anything besides these features and I don't plan on using it much after my trip (most likely will give it to one of my young nieces). I was brwosing the craigslist and found the 2nd generation is half the price of 4th. and 3rd generation is somewhere in between.

Which generation would suit me the best without spending extra cash?

Thank you.

Honestly if quality of service is a concern at all for you, you should just buy a GSM phone. If you are in the US, all you need to do is order one from amazon (search "GSM quadband phone") and then buy a SIM card locally. It really is that simple. It should not run you more than $50.

Great. I'll be buying a gsm quad band phone for my travels. Thank you for your help.

now, I am also thinking that I still want to get an iPOD for my travels as I will not be taking my laptop with me. Any advice on which generation would be ideal? Can the older generations (the 2nd and 3rd) do everything software related that the 4th generation is capable of? (my understanding is that the 4th is faster, has cameras, and has retina display when compared to 2nd and 3rd generation). not sure what the difference between the 2nd and 3rd generations are? but it seems that all 3 can brwose the web the same, no?

Hello,
The second gen and 3 gen look the same...
the difference:
-they had faster processer
-32/64gb model had headphones with mike (YOU WILL NEED THESE HEADPHONES TO SKYPE WITH!!! YOU CAN BUY THEM ON THE APPLE STORE)
-The 8gb model was the same generation to generation

both models can surf the net :apple:

just bought a 3rd generation 32gb ipod touch for pretty decent price. thanks for all the help.
