In the new 3GHz imac, the apple stores lists 500gb, 750gb, and 1TB but does not list the speed or brands of the drives. I expect that the 1TB would be slower than the 500gb and 750gb, but are the 500gb and 750gb equal in speed?
If you care about hard drive speed, throw the 500GB out and put one of those new 300GB VelociRaptors in. (Provided it fits of course, I don't think the iMac requires a standard SATA backplane like the Mac Pro/Xserve does.)
I really didn't want to risk opening it. I've heard really bad stories about people getting a bunch of dust in their screens after they opened up their imac.
Apple uses various drives based on price/availability. No guarantee
that two "identical" iMacs will have the same internal drive. It's purely
a matter of "luck of the draw."
WRT WesternDigital's VelociRaptor -- they're quick, but only slightly
faster than Seagate's 7200.11 family (500GB, 750BG, 1TB), and not
quite as fast as Samsung's 1TB Spinpoint F1. A 300GB VelociRaptor
also costs far more than fast 1TB drives from Seagate or Samsung.
