Which Hard Drive?

Im planning on getting a new bigger hard drive for my Macbook Pro which is now 120 gb. I'll probobly sell my old hard drive or slap and enclosure on it.

1. Is there a big difference in power consumption (battery life) from the 5400rpm hard drives to the 7200rpm hd?

2. Is there a big difference in speed from 5400 to 7200 hd's

3. If you have had one of these Hard Drives installed did they work well?

Hitachi Travelstar™ 5K250 - 250gb - 5400rpm - $190

Western DIgital Scorpio - 250gb - 5400rpm - $200

Hitachi Travelstar™ 7K200 - 200gb - 7200rpm - $250

I have the 200gb 7200 rpm Hitachi, and it is SUPER fast. I've tried to Scorpio as well...I'm sorry Squeeks, but it just doesn't seem as fast! Maybe it's a mental thing with me (7200 rpm v. 5400 rpm, I know I know about platter size, etc.), but it just seems snappier to me. Love it!

And to the OP: you can get them much cheaper than those prices you listed. Newegg.com for one, has all of those at least $30-40 cheaper than you listed, on the Hitachi anyway.

Besides, the 200GB Hitachi has the 16MB cache, which is always a bonus, that could explain some of the snappiness. If the drive can cache twice as much then it only needs to go to the platters about half as often.

i think mentality has a lot to do with it, it would seems slower to me knowing its not as fast, even if people claim it to be...but like i said, im just quoting what i heard someone else experience

I've heard some people complain that the Hitachi drives make a bit more noise and procuce more heat than the Seagates and Western Digitals. Have any of you noticed anything like that?

I'm hoping the answer is no because I've had my eye on that say $205 drive at newegg!

I went with the WD. Very quite drive and fast. As fast as the 7200......I'm sure it isn't but I went with capacity over the very little speed increase.

I have read that the difference is fairly minimal. I guess if you were to compare a 4200RPM drive to a 7200RPM, you would see a larger difference, but from 5400RPM to 7200RPM it shouldn't be that extreme.
