Which HD for my backup purposes?

I had some money left over from x-mas so i figured i would do the smart thing and start backing up.

I already have a case picked out it is this one. Now i need to decide which HD to get. I plan on backing up an iMac and my iBook to this, and if at all possible i would like both of those partitions to be bootable.

My first option would be to get one big HD like this one and partition it at the 160GB mark for the iMac and the 40GB mark for the iBook and then the remaining 50GB would be for misc. files.

My second option would be to get two of these and use one for the iMac and one for the iBook. The one for the iBook would be split at about the 40GB mark and then the ramaining 120GB would be used for misc. files.

The first option would cost me $150ish plus tax and shipping.

The second option would cost more then that but i could always find a cheaper case and get two to fit the HD's. This one would cost me $200ish plus shipping and tax.

So which option is better for me??

I could use some input fromt he many people that do backups and what the best way to go about it is.

if you plan on using a hard drive for misc files get 2 of those hard drives


use one for JUST backing with two partitions one for iMac and one for iBook

and then use the second drive for your misc files and then back those to the remaining space --- that way EVERYTHING is backed up and you have one acting as a work horse and one acting as your emergency life line

I agree. It's safer to have one drive dedicated to backups, that you spin up only in order to back up. Using your backup drive for run-of-the-mill, daily storage just shortens the life of your backup, which kind of defeats the purpose of having the backup drive in the first place.

Well i plan on using one for the iMac and one for the iBook. The one that will be used for with the iBook will also be used for just regular storage purposes.

Well now i need to look for some decent cases to put them in that have firewire 400 and is not to ugly or expensive.

So are there any suggestion for cases that are in the 50 dollar range??
