I'm a recently graduated Animation student, with large projects i plan on getting on board with soon. I use Adobe (mostly Animate and After Effects) for my work, which can be very power demanding. I have been using a mid 2014 macbook pro with 16gb Ram and
2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7. This laptop only just gets by with my work load. It is pretty useless at running Adobe Animate, playback is very choppy, and after effects can be a nightmare as well.
I'm going to invest in a desktop computer, preferably an iMac. I've done my research and came to the conclusion of settling for a 27 inch 5K iMac with an i9 processor using Radeon Pro 580X graphics. However i've read that the overheating due to the i9 processor has been a major issue for many users, but on the contrary there are plenty of youtube reviews saying it runs smoothly without overheating. I'm really unsure about this now. I've read that the i5 processor runs much cooler, but I'm not too keen on buying a new desktop iMac with an i5 processor, when my current laptop is an i7, and still runs snail slow. I may be completely off track as to how processors work so please bare with me!
Would someone please explain to me which iMac config would be best for someone who animates and relies on After effects and possibly other video or animation editing softwares using 4k resolutions and heaps of layers of masks/effects/colours etc. I cannot wait until 2020 or later for a possible new iMac design, as I'm sorta needing to get on board with production of animations quite soon, and I also cannot afford an iMac Pro unfortunately!
Any help appreciated!
