Which iMac ?

Good Day All

This has been discussed a few times before between the 20 and 24 inch iMac's
In short, coming over from the "dark-side, PC World" to Mac, Why? fed up with virus's , malware, firewalls, and MS's spying on OS and upgrades amongst other reasons.

Is the 24" mainly for Music and High end graphics people? I have priced out both the 20 and the 24, with 2.16 proc, 2 gig ram, max video and 250gig hd

20" = $1777.68
24" = $2338.00

I do NOT intend on any gaming at all, this will be used, for Word, MySql database work, web development and photo shop, maybe quark and flash.

I think the answer to my question is to hit the apple store here in Albany NY and pick there brains some more, because not really know the OSx and how the windows layout and switching back and forth from say DW to MySql "Multitasking" really works on an Apple.

I also calculated that the between the 2 systems is a 500+ difference for 4inches of landscape. I have been using a 20" Flat Screen for 2+ years now and have NO problem. I DONT want to short myself now and look back and say NUTZZ I should have gone with the 24, BUT I DONT want to WASTE money either.

I have just made the switch to the otherside from XP - my iMac arrived on Tuesday.

I was going to get the 24" but when I went to a store I decided the 20" was more the sufficient for my needs and I upped the spec to the max (2GB not 3GB though) and I find it excellent.

Based on what you plan on using it for I think you'll find a 20" more than enough but it's up to you at the end of the day.

Personally I'm glad I didn't spend the extra cash on the 24".

Mine's much the same but with the 2.33 processor speed and 500GB HD.

How many days did it actually take before yours shipped?


I was going to do the 2.33 but the vast majority said that I would NOT see the difference, even the sales guy did, and for 235.00 dollars more I figured based on what I have read on numerous forums , posts, emails, it just was not worth it too. As long as it does what I expect and what I have been told by others than I am fine with it.

I would tell anyone looking into buying a new iMac to go with the 20" UNLESS you need the Extra Res.

I opted for the :
iMac 20"
2.16mhz
256vram graphics,
2gig Memory,
250gig hd,

I am definitly glad I made that choice. Its the best system I have ever owned and the 20" screen is Large enough for my Needs! :)

It's all about the graphics card

I have been mulling this over myself... Macbook pro 2.16 or 20" imac or 24" imac. The 24" has a really nice graphics card that is rumored to be upgradable and it has a bigger hard drive. It's also supposed to have better speakers. If you were going to use your imac as a media center, you might really want to consider it. Especially if you had eye tv or something like that. I already have a second monitor for my powerbook that also functions as a tv (Samsung 940mw) so I am more apt to get the macbook or smaller imac.

I think the C2D 20" iMAC is a wise choice. I just won one off of EBAY that is only 3 months old for $1070...talk about a steal!

I am still waiting on it(I payed via Paypal on Sunday). I'm a little nervous because I have sent 2 emails to the seller since the auction ended and haven't received a reply yet, altough he has a 100% Feedback rating. Oh well-I'll wait awhile longer and see if I receive it.:confused:

I would agree, I think to get the 24" you need a good reason/purpose for it otherwise I think the money is better spent upgrading the spec of the 20" - even the 20" basic spec is good enough for most people.

Yeah the built in speakers are fine for watching media clips and maybe some music, and they actually sound prertty good its just they have no bass at all.

Well I am hoping my ships by tomorrow, all I know is that the sales guy in the inventory dept, that I ordered it from said I would have it by Nov 10th,

As far as the 24", Nice But I don't do the work to support nor justify having such a monitor

I would have probably got a 20" iMac if the graphics card were upgradeable....but the 24" smashed it hands down in that department so I went for that.

When you think that an Apple 23" cinema display is only a few hundred quid cheaper than the whole 24"iMac computer then I think it is still a bargain.

But of course if the budget is tight then you cut your cloth and get the best you can.

I'm looking forward to getting my 24" (hopefully tomorrow). I remember 15" screens looking ridiculous back in the 90's and nowadays we multitask so much that personally I think the extra screen estate is quite important.

yep Kisco, I loooooove my 24 Incher :D the screen is fantastic and I never felt it is too big, now I actually feel that the size is "normal" :rolleyes:

Interesting points by the 24inchers in the forum, I've got a 20" C2D. I was seriously considering the 24, but to me it's a little overkill, especially if you don't NEED the bigger screen. I'm very pleased with my 20" and I can do multiple window work, etc. just fine. I would get the 20" and save yourself some money, unless money is no object. Then I would totally get the 24" :D
