I have a 2020 12.9 iPad Pro which I love - Im having to return it to my job in June as I'm leaving for a new job. With that my question is which iPad to go with? I love the large screen and am very tempted to go with the 2021 12.9 as this screen size is perfect, however I worry that for what I use it for, the price may be a little much. I mainly use it for web browsing, viewing patient charts, watching/downloading lectures/movies, zoom meetings, etc. Silly question probably since if I want the size - I guess the obvious answer would be to buy a 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 inch

Right now, if buying brand new, you’d only save maybe $100-200 by getting last year’s model (~$900 vs $1000-1100).
For savings that small and considering the device is still gonna be in the $1K region, I’d rather get the latest model. If you’re okay with used and sticking to 12.9” size, there should be good deals on 2018 12.9 which is practically the same as the 2020 12.9.

Get the 2021 model! Big jump in technology in 2021 12.9"! 11" is too!
Probably the route I’ll go haha. Just hate to spend > 1k on what is not my primary computer. I’ll definitely be updating my 2015 mbp this year as well
I got over that a while back. I have a work supplied desktop and laptop so I don't need to use the iPad for work (although I do find it handy for PDF markup).
I also have a personal desktop and laptop. The desktop is always-on and double duties as local Calibre and Plex server. The laptop is used quite rarely.
$1200 Laptop
4 hrs * 6 times a year = 24 hours
Hourly Rate: $50/hr
$1200 iPad
8 hrs per day * 5 days a week * 52 weeks per year = 2080 hours
Hourly Rate: $0.58/hr
I don't replace them every year so the actual hourly rates are lower. Regardless, I get greater utility from the iPad than the laptop.
The entry level iPad can do all these tasks as well. If you feel you’re paying too much, why not order that one and see how far you get especially with two weeks return period. While iPad Pro’s are nice the lower ones largely do the same things.
I get the ipad Air 4 it’s half the price and you still get everything you get that the iPad Pro has other then the 120 Refresh rate
I’ll be going with probably base model of the new MacBook Pro whenever they release them - either 14 inch or 16 inch. I have 2016 15 inch currently (keyboard is driving me insane)
For what you are using it, the 2020 model is just fine and you can find it discounted up to $150.
for you, yes 12.9 based on what you state, zoom alone is worth it TBH...
i would not go with old teach resale value will just not be there... everyone will WANT the M1...
yes but I will still get a student discount too - (not sure if they offer for older models?) which would knock 100 off anyway
That’s a good point. I’m in the UK and can get a 12.9 256gb 2020 for £915 but the new 2021 is only £1099 so for £184 I’d rather get the new model that as you point out, will have a better resale price.
