I currently have an Ipad 3. Is Apple going to release a new iPad 9.7 this year ? Do you think it would be worth it to spend the extra money and get the iPad Air 10 inch ?

Yes I would. I have the Air, previously I bought the IPad 9.7. I returned the IPad 9.7 mainly due to the quality of the screen, it’s non laminated. IMO I found the effect of the non laminated screen to be like taking on plastic, for that alone i’d recommend the Air. I think also the Air has a better processor and as it’s a newer device if will have iOS support for at least one year longer.

If your check the specs on paper for both devices you will see that the Air is a better machine. Also check You Tube, I think you will find comparison videos on there.

I think by the end of the year we should have the rumored 10.2” iPad, which would supposedly be this year’s version of the standard 9.7” model.

I have no idea what the specs would be on it, though. Maybe an A11 chip, but I’m not sure what else would be different besides screen size, compared to the 2018 iPad.

Basically any iPad you buy today will be a massive upgrade over the iPad 3. But, the best value right now is the Air 3 (or a 10.5 Pro if you can find it before retailers finish clearing out stock). It costs the same as the iPad 3 did back in 2012. But you get a bigger, laminated screen that can display a wider range of colors, a vastly faster chip and 3 times the RAM, a noticeably thinner and lighter device, and support for the pencil and Smart Keyboard if those are things you want. If you can find a Pro at a discount, you’ll also get quad speakers and the faster refresh rate on the screen for smoother scrolling.

The base iPad is not a bad device. It’s still a great upgrade over what you have now and you shouldn’t feel bad about picking it if price is a concern. But the extra $170 you’d spend to get the 10.5” Air or a Pro on clearance is well worth it in my opinion.

It really depends on what your use case is. If all you do is send three emails a week I doubt you’d need a new iPad.

Get the cheapest. The Pro versions are a massively overpriced and give you very little over the base iPad. They are available brand new for £299 here in the UK from John Lewis with a 2 year warranty.

Picked up a lightly used IPP 10.5 256 GB on OfferUp for 350 in great shape. The person selling it said she got it for Christmas from her boyfriend and has no interest in it.

When I verified the serial #, it has active warranty coverage until 12/30/19. Her story seems to check out.
Been loving it. Especially since you can find good deals on older accessories too. Picked up the ASK at Costco for 79.00 and Walmart was clearing out the V1 pencil for 69.00.
Both of these work with the Air 3 too.

The iPad 6th gen 2018 screen is not to bad. It sounds a little like a drum if you tap the center. But it’s great for what you are getting. Easily the best tablet in the world for the money, and considering you can get a brand new one for around $279 bucks! A iPad Air 3 is nearly double the price of a iPad 2018 6th gen.

I own a iPad Pro 11” 1TB, and sometimes ill use my sons iPad 6th gen 2018 “No complaints at all!”

When I’m using it, I’m NOT thinking man this thing is terrible. I’m actually thinking more like, what the hell was I thinking for not just buying one like his? lol.

I think it's back on sale for $250 for Mother's Day for 32GB.

So yeah that is incredible. The iPad Air is literally double the price. Probably not many sells on it at all.

Is there a sale for the iPad Air 3?

Probably $479 lol. The iPad Air 3 is twice as expensive. That’s crazy.

I just do not think a non laminated display is all that bad.

Nor me, but the A10 and 2GB RAM was enough for me not to want to buy it in 2019. Perhaps if it were cheaper (it’s at full retail here.)

Mind you, I do think the Air 3 is a pretty good middle ground between the $329 MSRP iPad 9.7 and the $799 MSRP iPad Pro 11. If both basic and Air 3 were at MSRP, I'd consider $170 reasonable for:
larger, laminated display
A10 -> A12
2GB -> 3GB
32GB -> 64GB

The waters are just a bit muddied right now because of all the sales on the 2018 basic and Pro iPads as well as Pro 10.5 so full pricing on Air 3 isn't looking good in comparison. Once we get good sales on the Air 3, it'll start looking more attractive.

Granted, if/when the basic iPads goes up to A12/3GB, that's one less advantage for the Air 3 over entry-level iPad.

Mind, we still have Air 2 (A8X/2GB) and 2017 iPad 9.7 (A9/2GB) in the household and for typical tasks (browsing, streaming, etc), they're performing quite well. Certainly far better than the iPad 2 at 2 years old (iOS 7).

I had an Air 2 and upgraded to an Air 3 last week. The 3 smokes a 2. It is awesome.

Right now (and I know I'm coming in a little bit late to the game), for the money, I just don't think you can beat the iPad 6th gen. I recently upgraded another of my grandkids to the 6th gen from the 5th (sold the 5th gen locally in exc condition for $200, so almost covered the cost), mainly for pencil support, and paid $259. I used a 6th gen for months between selling my 12.9 2nd gen pro, and purchasing my 11" pro, and it was such a good little device, I almost didn't wind up getting another pro.

Everyone's needs are different of course, but I think the regular iPad is one of the best overall values Apple has, especially at the prices you can find right now!

All depends on what you are using it for...

If it’s just browsing and apps? The lowest cost one would suit you fine.

I have the 128GB iPad 6th Gen, perfect for my needs, email, colouring, light gaming and reading. It replaced my MacBook air 11' as my goto device.

The 11inch is nice but the 9inch is smaller to use but the best travel tablet is the iPad 7inch.
