All. I currently have a 2012 24 core Mac Pro and looking to finally upgrade. I’ll be mostly doing desktop apps web browsing and email and some light video editing via final cut.

That’s it. I don’t think I need the studio but I am so far out of the apple game as I have been holding on to this pro I bought used from a friend about 7 years ago. Time to upgrade.

Based on your needs it seems like even the base M1 Mac mini should be more than enough. Of course, if you have the money and are willing to pay for the Mac studio, there’s absolutely no harm in this. I just don’t think you’ll ever need this power.

If you want something in the middle, wait a few weeks for the rumored high end Mac mini update

I don’t think I’ll need the power as well. I was hoping for a mini update today. Lol. I can wait a little longer. Not exactly in a big hurry. I can wait for a mini M1 max

I think this is very good advice. Advice I personally will be following as I do not need an M1 Mac ASAP. My replacement Mac, is old but still does the job fine.

Just my 2ct... after todays announcement I don't expect the release of a "Mac mini M1 Max" anymore. To me it looks like the higher end is now claimed by the Mac Studio and the next Mac Mini update will only bring an M2 version (lower end). If they put something like the M1 Max in the Mini, it would be much too close to the Studio.

I’d agree with you… what confuses me is that Apple didn’t discontinue the high-end Mac mini today as it did with the 27 inch iMac. Why would they keep it if they don’t plan to upgrade it this year? Maybe it’s just because they want to keep an Intel mac mini in the line up for some time. We’ll see what Apple plans to do with it

I agree a M1 Max Mac mini would be too close in the Mac Studio territory, but I can see the M1 Pro being the higher end option in Mac Mini

I think that Apple decided to create the Mac Studio rather than offer a higher-end Mac mini because there are Mac Studio configurations that would be problematic in a smaller chassis.

Yeah I thought it was odd that they didn't update it and the highest end Intel mini is still available - it might be an M1 Pro though, not Max.

There's the M1 Pro though and Apple still hasn't discontinued the highest-end Intel mac mini indicating is yet to be replaced.

I have my doubts that there will be a Mini with M1 Max given that the Studio is offered with an M1 Max. There would clearly be a product overlap, which Apple doesn't tend to do.

There may be a Mini with M1 Pro (or maybe M2 Pro sometime next year), and presumably an M2 refresh to replace the current M1 version.

I'd wait for the next Mini refresh. It might jsut be an M2 upgrade but I wonder if they'll offer a 32G RAM option.

That said, OP, you're using a 10 year old Mini. The base Mini, perhaps with 16g and whatever storage you need will be a huge upgrade.

Considering that the base memory on the studio is high for most purposes and that you look like one that holds in the hardware instead of replacing often, go for the bigger/best you can get. Plus, it have a lot of nice ports, so it can be "extended" by extra stuff in case later you need it.

Yeah. I hold on to my stuff for a while. If I am dropping 3k for a machine I better be able to use it for a decade or longer

I don’t think that’s true though considering that you have an iPad Air, iPad Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac all with the same M1 chip now.

Im not saying that there will be an Mac mini with M1 Max. But this argument against it I wouldn’t believe. A Mac mini with M1 Max could still have less ports, less upgrade options, smaller thermal envelope …

What seems uncharacteristic is the huge gap between the M1 mini and the M1 Max Studio.

And you can still buy the Intel mini and upgrade it all the way to $2,999 today for some reason. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an Apple silicon mini for the same price point in the future.
