m1 Pro (10CPU/16GPU) vs m4 (10CPU/10GPU). Both enclosed in a Macbook Pro 14" body. Is the basic M4 going to be faster. Anyone find any numbers on Geekbench or elsewhere comparing the two machines ? Background: am thinking of replacing an 2021 Macbook Pro 14" (m1pro 10cpu/16gpu w/32GB RAM, 1TB SSD) with a macbook Pro 14" (m4 10cpu/10gpu 48GB 32 GB RAM, 1TB SSD).

Typical workload is:
- video / photo and audio including large transcoding jobs
- programming and builds

Thx

edit: changed to 32Gb instead of 48GB for M4

I don't think the Base M4 can have 48GB RAM at all? You need to go with at least M4 Pro for that amount of ram and then it will be no doubt faster.

@Gnattu Thx, my mistake re: m4 top capacity on RAM (have corrected above).

Am positive the m4pro would be faster BUT am hoping to get by with a normal base m4 itself.

Pretty sure you can see numbers for both on geekbench. Wont tell much necessarily about performance for your workload.

Looks like m4 base would be faster in most tasks than M1 Pro. However, I’m not sure it’s a meaningful upgrade if money is tight and performance is ok, you should wait. And if performance on M1 Pro is not ok, I doubt m4 base will be enough of an improvement to be worth the cost.

This article seems to indicate that M4 will beat M1 Pro at single core and multi-core, but not GPU.

Day to day usage will probably feel faster with the M4, and the M1 Pro might be a bit faster for renders, but slower for compiles.

The M4 is faster when rendering in Blender or similar 3D apps thanks to the hardware raytracing acceleration.

Anyway, imho it doesn't make sense to replace a M1 Pro Mac with a M4 unless you need raytracing.
