4.3 BSD was the best of its time. OS X put a usable GUI on it, although Apple is stubborn about (not) allowing certain options.

Windows? Scott McNealy was right . ("A giant hairball.")

For the most part I think OS/2 was an amazing performer and also used the REXX batch language which wasn't too shabby. It also did DOS better than native MSDOS and also Windows 3.x better than Windows 3.x.

Its screens were a cross of what we see as OSX and also Windows 2000. This was an OS that met business needs and aside from lack of apps was very easy to use at home.

On the Windows side, I think Win98 was great. I've so far been having good luck with Win 7 too. For Mac, Tiger was by far the best cat they produced. Mavericks seems to be okay so far, but it's still too early to tell.

OSX: probably about 10.4
Windows: Windows 2000 or Windows 7. Both seem stable and lacking in some of the garish rubbish you get on the other versions.
Unix: Possibly BSD 4.3. Certainly contained a lot of important stuff

Honourable mentions: Risc OS (booted from ROM instantly) and AmigaOS.

Another vote for OS/2. There was a brief period when IBM and Apple were collaborating on a Object Oriented Programming, though nothing really came of it... though I suspect some of the ideas filtered down into OS X at some levels. I went from DOS to OS/2 to OS X, and never got around to ever having Windows as my primary OS. Ever.

My favorite version of Windows was 2000 (have used pretty much them all since 95). Only been using OS X since 2010, so limited window there. But I really liked 10.6.

Favorite OS X: OS X Tiger.
Favorite Windows: Windows 8.
Favorite Linux: Ubuntu 9.

Here's my favorites, different platforms, different favorites
System 7
OSX 10.4
Windows 7
Dos 2.11 :D
Almost any version of fedora, I like them all

Oh, hail yeah!

Amiga OS comes second. A multitasking OS that can run in only 256K of RAM. Best OS of the 80's and early 90's.

It was a travesty that the Amiga died off. It was an incredibly advanced machine for its time. I'm getting all nostalgic now. Deluxe Paint, Vista Pro - sigh!

Definitely really liking 10.9... I think with Mavericks, Apple is really starting to truly fine tune everything...

And OP I have to ask... why did you make windows XP a choice?? :p :D

If you're talking Windows, Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 7 are considered by many the best versions of Windows produced by Microsoft.

Mind you, I think Windows 7 really lucked out because at the time of Windows 7's release in October 2009, computers with x86-64 instruction set support were widely available and very reasonably priced. As such, it got adopted with lightning fast speed.

I liked Windows 2000 but Windows NT 4.1 was better imho. One of the first true 64-bit platforms.

Apple OS side I'd say OS 9.2.

Overall, OS X 10.4 Tiger reigns supreme in my book; just the right amount of features without useless eye candy, (but still tasteful) and solid as a rock.

On the Windows side, I'm partial to Windows 95 because it was what my first computer I owned ran. But, taking off the nostalgia glasses for a moment, I must admit that BSOD and I were good friends. :p Windows XP was truly the best overall; simple design, and decent stability.

Linux? Uh. Linux Mint was...nice. Ubuntu is, you know, um, popular and sort of...pretty. I think I used Damn Small Linux once too?

MS-DOS 3.3. Say what you like, but that OS was rock solid and WORKED! Granted, it wasn't the greatest at multitasking, but what it did, it did well.

As for a modern OS, I'd have to say OSX 10.6 (though Mavericks has been far more stable than Lion/Mountain Lion were).

Same here voting on 10.4 and I had decided that way before I even looked at the rest of the thread,I guess its because I rode with it for so long before eventually upgrading to 10.5 after months of excitement because back then it was (and still kinda is) expensive for a ligitamate copy of 10.5,that and finally being able to use iTunes with the iPhone I had....but 10.4 stuck with me for some reason I remember like it was yesterday (its fully updated to 10.4.11) and my b day is 10-4......

Pretty much right with you these

win 2k - thumbs up here - loved that old gal

BSD .... OpenSolaris :)

and the AmigaOS - true multitasking OS ahead of its time back then :)
(still got me some lovely Amiga emu's)

For its time/era, Amiga OS / Workbench

My favourite OS X version was 10.5 Leopard, at least once they fixed stacks to have options (I forget which point update…), so let's say 10.5.8., also the last PPC version which kind of says something I guess.
