Hi, I need to replace the battery. What is the best one for it? There are many on Amazon. It is hard to tell which is reliable or not. Certainly don't want fire hazard. Thanks

I have not put everything back yet. As I recall when I took it out few days ago, I had some sort of security update of an older version of Mac OS. I will get back to you later on which OS it is running.

I had M1 MacBook Pro 16" next to it. I still prefer the MacBook Pro 17" 2010 except that it is noisy. I could not tell the screen quality improvement of the M1 MacBook Pro 16". Keyboard of the 17" is still more comfortable to type on.

How is the battery of your computer? Have you replaced it?

I can't recommend a particular make as I've never replaced the battery on my 2011 MacBook Pro 17" and it's still functioning well after all these years. (Makes you wonder why so many owners of new or far more recent models of MacBooks are so concerned about their batteries on showing no more than 90%).
If I were to order from Amazon I'd choose one which comes with a warranty and free customer service advise.

Regarding the latest possible OS for your MacBook from Apple it's 10.13.6. There's a 3rd party patch available that will allow you to run OS Catalina, but I personally prefer to stick with High Sierra.

You state your MacBook Pro 17" is "noisy". Is it fan noise or more like a clicking sound?
i) If the former your Macbook is probably running hotter than normal due to dust build-up in the fans and exit guides. Easy enough to clean out.
ii) If it's a clicking noise it's likely that your original hard drive is starting to fail. The best improvement one can give to these marvellous 17" Macbooks is to install an SSD with a fresh install of High Sierra 10.13.6. It's what I did and it transformed the performance! No way would I exchange it for a difficult/very expensive to repair more modern MacBook.

I checked but those fans and exit guides don't have dust blocking. Also I use SSD rather than hard disk. I am sure those are jet engine fan noise.

I just checked. Mine is High Sierra 10.13.6 (security update). That is the latest version Apple allows me to upgrade.
