I’ve never used a VPN before and I’m not 100% sure how they work, but I’d like to start using one for privacy with my Apple Devices.

The reason this happened is I messaged a question to a website and when they responded my VPN was in the reply...after looking it up, it pretty much gave my exact location (which was a bit concerning).

I don’t need it through my Router or for all the devices in my home, I just want it on my iPhone and Mac (specifically when surfing the web).

For example, I don’t want it to be used when I’m on Netflix, MLB TV, or streaming anything else...I’ve read that it can affect internet speeds, so I really just want it when I’m using Safari.

I’ve read about NordVPN and ExpressVPN...does anyone have any recommendations?

Also, I want to make sure Google Maps (and my other Locations Services for everything else on my iPhone/Mac) are working properly if I have a VPN...does a VPN mess with that stuff or can I just get it to work when surfing the web?

Thanks!

You should probably do your own research as you may not fully understand what it is that you want. Look up "browser proxy" as well as VPN.

A browser proxy in macOS Safari would affect Google Maps some but not much. Using a browser proxy in iOS Safari wouldn't affect other apps, I'm pretty sure.

The VPNs I've tried run ALL data through the VPN...macOS or iOS. Google Maps still knows where you are, though, due to the GPS system.

Before you pay $100 per year on VPN decide what you want it for. Then look through this site:
https://thatoneprivacysite.net/

I use IVPN but I have used in the past Freedome F secure VPN.

Another issue to look into is battery consumption. I had issues in the past where VPN app would consistently used 10-30% of my battery.
