Please help me! I've been going around in circles now trying to decide which is the better camera and which is the better deal!

I'm looking for a DSLR and I have narrowed it down to the Canon 100D or 1200D

From what I can see, the 100D is the slightly better camera and has a few more features than the 1200D.

The 100D is £269 with an 18-55mm lens, an extra battery and cleaning cloth.

The 1200D is £319 with the same 18-55mm lens, but also comes with a 70-300mm sigma lens

I am going to be taking pictures of just about anything really, but mostly it will be of sports, in particular, cricket, meaning it needs to have a good zoom to get close shots from the boundary.

Which is the better one for me? Thanks in advance

They are very similar cameras, I'd go with the 1200d just to get the additional zoom lens for shooting cricket matches.

Keep in mind that the 100D, 1200D are essentially the same cameras as the 550D, 600D and 650D. You might find really good deals on those cameras used - and lots of them have barely been used.

Hmm... Check the price of the lenses separately. They may not be the bargain you think they are.

I would imagine you are going to want to get the EF 70-300 IS USM at some point so dont think the bundled lens will be as useful as you would first think.

That 300mm lens may not be as useful as you think. I'm pretty sure it is a slow f/5.6 lens and that it lacks "IS" or image stabilization.

You are best to think first about the lens if the subject is sports. t matters a LOT more than when dSLR body you buy. For most general subjects where you are allowed to walk up close and there is a reasonable amount of light the 18-55mm is ok.

Get the 1200D out of those two, the 70-300 will be necessary for the reach for cricket. You will probably want to stop the arm/ball/bat action so you will need to be around 1/350-1/500 shutter at which point it won't matter that it doesn't have IS.

You will just need to be ready to shoot at f/5.6 and crank up the ISO to enable you to also have 1/350-1/500 shutter but this is a Canon so ISO6400 is probably going to be quite usable. ISO6400 will enable you to still shoot under most sports ground floodlights - although I shoot hockey and lacrosse so neither has quite the distance issue for floodlights to cover that a cricket ground has so it may get marginal for you. DON'T use flash.

If you have enough light your priority is to use a lower ISO, once you are around ISO800 look to stop the lens down (which usually improves the sharpness). Ideally head for f/8, 1/500, ISO 200. On really bright days then simply crank up to a faster shutter speed.

Enjoy!

For what you want - the 1200d with sigma 70-300 is a cracking deal!

simonsi is correct that you'll need a high shutter speed as the lens doesn't have IS, however if you find that you need to slow down the shutter speed to get a little motion blur, you could always use a monopod.

enjoy!
