i will be buying a mac pro within the next 2 weeks and plan on taking advantage of the free ipod deal. I am considering 2 configurations everything the same between the two except the processor. if i go with the quad 2ghz then i will upgrade the ipod to a 30g and keep it for myself However if i go with the 2.66 quad then i will sell the ipod on ebay or craigslist. i am short on funds so the 2 ghz is looking like my best choice. Is it worth it to get the 2.66? i am doing lots of video editing but dont mind waiting for render time? either way its gonna be way faster than my single proccesor windows machine.

The faster the processor, the longer it will take for the machine to become obsolete.

I'm currently torn between the 2.66 and the 3.0.

Get the 2.66, sell the iPod, get an iPod later. The 2.66 is a far greater value for money.

if you don't have enough get the 2.66, if you are cut short for money and can only afford it with the 2.0, then just get the 2.0 like i did. Either way it will be an awesome machine, but it is true that you will be happy with it longer if you have the 2.66:D

The 2.6 is the sweet spot for price / performance. I also like the 130 watt total CPU power usage vs. 160 watt on the 3's.

alright it looks unanimous for me to get the 2.66! just wish i had the money to replace my second generation 10 gig ipod! lol! alright thanks

Go for the 2.66 and don't worry about the iPod so much.

You need to focus on how much RAM you're going to be able to afford and any applications you may need to aquire.

Your Mac Pro will need at least 2 GB Fully Buffered ECC RAM just to get you in the ballpark.

A Dell display is FINE especially if the money you save on a Dell display
leaves you enough in your budget for the faster Mac.

i already have a few displays i can plug in no widescreens unfortuantely. As for memory ill prolly have to make a few hundred bucks using the mac pro before i can justify getting more memory ill upgrade from crucial! But yeah ill still be cutting it close getting the mac pro, budget wise.

I absolutely need airport for this and am probably gonna throw in bluetooth since pretty much every handheld device will have bluetooth in the next year or so. is it a good idea to put the bluetooth in? also what do you think about the wireless keyboard mouse? 54bucks is a pretty good deal!

bluetooth is a good idea if you want a wireless keyboard and mouse, and don't want to have to deal with usb receivers. Also, if you have a PDA or phone that can sync via bluetooth that can be really useful. I have the apple wireless keyboard and it is great, you should go for bluetooth and the wireless keyboard wireless mighty mouse combo. Enjoy your mac pro!

If you are trying to save money allowing you to get the faster machine and you don't want to wait 3- 5 weeks for a custom BTO order, just get the MacPro stock and add the Airport/Bluetooth option later.

I would order by phone and check on the cost and time to add all the wireless options you want.

Wireless is outstanding, but if you have any extra funds, spend it on RAM 1st.

If you insist on getting the Airport/Bluetooth card, ask if they can ship it to you
separately, so it doesn't hold up your order.
