Which mac would you choose if you were me?

I can’t decide which mac i should choose. I am considering to buy an 16 inch macbook pro (base model) or an imac(512gb ssd, 16gb ram, 3.6ghz nineth generation cpu).

I am an ios & android developer so there will be no video editing nor gaming.

I am going to use my new computer at my office. So i will be using it on the desk %70 of my usage time.

As i said mostly i will be using it on the desk so if i buy an macbook pro then i need to buy a 2k monitor. Also i need to buy dongles for monitor and connecting my phone.

Maybe you could say “why are you not going with an imac if you are planning to use it on the desk for %70 of your time?”

Well, that is a good question but imac is causing to me feel that feeling: it feels old, no truetone screen, neither touchid nor faceid, big bezels etc. I feel like it will get a redesign soon. But the macbook pro feels like a latest model of a fancy car. But on the other side 5K screen is gorgeous and imac’s performance is better than the macbook pro by the youtube reviews.

I‘d go with the MBP if you’re willing to buy a monitor. That will give you lots of real estate, and the option to go mobile.

Yeah but currently i have a 2012 mbp with a full hd monitor, and fonts are blurry there are no anti aliasing for external monitors on macos. I don’t how is this on 2K

I'd prefer an iMac.
If you'd buy an MBP and have it connected permanently to a monitor ,depending on the graphics load, the MBP will easily run hot and sound like a hairdryer...
Plus the extra cost for a quality monitor...

Yeah, if you don't want to touch the hotsurface then you have to buy external magic keyboard and trackpad... I guess imac is the best option for me. But still i would like to listen other people's comments.

Buy a well-equipped Mac Mini for the desktop, and take the money you saved and buy a 2020 base model Macbook Pro 13" or 2020 Macbook Air for portability when you need it.

If you buy Apple-refurbished you can save more...

You didn't mention how urgent the decision is. Why not wait just a short time longer and see what the new hardware will be? I wouldn't purchase anything right now, unless it was absolutely necessary.

I'm puzzled why this doesn't disqualify the iMac. Where do you expect the Mac to be the other 30% of the time?

I love my new 6-core mini as a Multimedia machine, and would get one as a replacement for an older iMac for my regular work, except... The Intel GPU in the little box is a dragging anchor. On many programs, the mini will outrun the 2017 5k, 32gb SSD iMac.

Unless graphics are involved.

Using something like KiCad is like being transported back to Win98 days, with a jumping cursor, massive pauses for screen rewrites, etc.

With a decent GPU, it would make a fabulous desktop. (Which is probably why it will never get one.)

(Yes, I have tried an external GPU, but most programs will not use it, even with the Prefer External GPU checked.)
