I have a logitech Z5500 connected to 20" iMac. When I play an AC3 avi file it doesn't output over SPDIF. I get no sound. This is when i'm using the core audio module. If i switch to default then I get sound but its stereo. I've also tried MPlayer but it doesn't seem to output digital signal, I get only stereo. It seems like only the apple DVD Player supports output of digital signal. Am I missing a setting in VLC? or does anyone know of any other player that supports output over SPDIF?

there was a better thread out there that managed to show to get 5.1 from optical out, but i can't find it.

Thanks for trying. I've also tried "-ac hwac3" option for both Mplayer OSX and Mplayer preview version directly from mplayerhq site and I just get lots of crackling noise.

i feel for you... my pc has an fireware, optical in/out, rca in/out, midi in/out and optical in/out on my sblive for years and it works just fine with powerdvd.

have you tried vlc? sorry, if this is a pointless, stupid post, it's just that sometimes when people have issues with avis with ac3 audio they can be fixed by using vlc (though not sure if that applies to this particular problem)
:confused::eek:

I have a Dual G5 with the Logitech Z-680 5.1 speaker set attached using the optical cable.

And I have NEVER got any other app than DVD Player to work with Dolby 5.1 output using my optical sound out :(
I've tried VLC, Mplayer, Doom 3, UT 2004....
I'm pretty sure I need a Dolby 5.1 PCI sound card, and the speakers connected using analog cables to get them to work. So much for just the one audio cable, and decoding on the Logitech speaker set amp.... :rolleyes:
