iPad mini Which Mini version are Apple Stores giving on battery replacement?

Our Mini 2 has a bad battery that will no longer take a charge. It gives the red symbol no matter which charger we try and the port is clean.

I was wondering what Mini version the Apple Stores are usually giving when you turn one in for a battery replacement. I am guessing a 2 at a minimum or any newer retina display model if they do not have a 2.

I do not expect them to have many or any Mini 2 models.

So you're asking if you'll give in your mini 2 and receive a mini 4 or something back for stocking reasons? Not impossible, but also not likely. You would probably be given a refurbished mini 2 from a central repository that they will likely have a huge cache of for this purspose exactly.

Due to how solidly the battery is glued in they might just swap the unit.
 
Does Apple still refuse to replace the battery if it passes their internal test - when the customer is willing to pay for the service?

Typically, unless it is a specially engraved ipad, you will not get yours back. They often quote twice as long on engraved ones. It's just easier for them to swap and replace/refurb elsewhere.

This might be true in the past, but I believe recently Apple is focusing on repairing your actual unit vs just swapping it with a refurbished one. There are plenty of complaints where people are not happy getting a refurbished units. As far as I know, Apple would only replace your unit with a refurbished/next closest model if they broke something during the repair process.

I had my 6S battery replaced twice, and at all times they gave me back my actual phone instead of swapping it with a refurbished version.

The iPad 3 (18 months older and the bodged release) still has trade in value so the Mini 2 must too. It likely isn’t much but some still choose to take it so they will have units to refurb.

They would be most likely to swap for a Mini 3 I think if they didn’t have any 2’s ready - the Touch ID was the only real difference (same processor) so they wouldn’t be giving away as much of an upgrade.

My understanding is that they are able to replace iPhone batteries (as well as some other routine iPhone repairs) in store and so that is the preferred method for iPhones, however iPads are another story. I think iPads typically have to be shipped away for any repairs so they typically offer a refurbished replacement for the cost of the repair.
 
What’s behind the curtain varies day to day.
You may get a like model or a newer one.
Depends on inventory.
One thing for sure is you will never get an older one

they give you whatever you give them. if the iPad model is older than 5 years since it stopped being sold (6 in turkey and perhaps a couple of other countries or 7 in California) you can't get anything. they won't give you even paid service at that point

on rare occasions when your iPad is older than the 5 but still within the cut off in one of those special locations if they don't have what you are giving them they will give you the oldest thing that is available which is often just one step up. but that's their call. if you ask and what you are giving them is still available it ain't happening

oh and in those special spots I believe the device has to have been bought in and is being serviced in said special location. you can't be in a store in California with an iPad you bought in Colorado.
 
FYI they gave me a new Mini 2. He said it was not a refurb. It did look new. Luckily the old one decided to start up when they tested it. The battery was down to 63% which is where they often see voltage fluctuations that cause problems like mine not starting most of the time. It actually showed 100% charged. $99 plus tax.
 
No one knows. It varies. You’ll likely just get a remanufactured mini 2.
