I am looking for advice on what MacBook Pro I should invest into. I will be using it to create various types of music, as well as music videos for said music. should I get the 13 inch 2015 retina or the 15 inch 2015 retina? or maybe I should wait for a 2016 model... also what base model of the 13 or 15 inch model would you recommend... thanks for your help.

I am aware that a desktop would most likely be better, but as I am always on the road I will need a laptop to accompany me so I can work wherever I may need to go.

The 13" models have dual core i5 and i7 processors and the 15" models have quad core i7 processors.

What screen size do you prefer? Do you want better portability or more processing power? Answer those questions and you will find your answer.

Also, I agree with the previous comment about refurbs.

I just picked up a 13" refurb and am planning on some light Garageband stuff. I went with 256GB since I also have a NAS for storage and Time Machine (backups).

I suspect the new Skylake MBPro laptops will be beautiful, but there are some good deals on refurbs right now too.

Whichever one you want they'll all do that work load, I think you'll peobably prefer the 15 inch for its screen size and sheer power to whizz through everything rapidly.

I'd opt for a newer 2016 model whenever that comes out and for my preference the 15" model is better, as its quad core and has a better GPU, so I'd recommend that over the 13". I also found the 13" display a bit constraining.

I have a 13" (2013) 2.4/8/256.

It works very well for uncompressed 1080p editing.

But depending on your specifc needs the 15" is preferable for video editing.

Either model will work fine for your usage now and for a years to come.

Is your work time critical? The main advantage (other than screen size) to the 15" is the quad core processor. It'll cut your rendering and effects time roughly in 2.

If you can "wait for a 2016 model", I'd suggest you wait just a little longer (might be 2-3 months). You may be pleasantly surprised.

Having said that, I'd suggest the 13" model.

Reasons:
- Cheaper and easier to carry around.
- Take the money you saved, and get a good 27" or larger display. You'll appreciate the additional screen real estate while working with music DAW apps, because you can see a greater portion of the timeline without scrolling left-to-right.
- 256 storage space and 16gb of RAM
