Which Monitor?

Hello All,

Getting ready to buy a new Mac Pro and was wondering if anyone had a good recommendation for a 27 inch monitor. My main use will be for Web Design and Photography. I wanted a Thunderbolt but obviously it won't work and have considered the Apple Cinema Display but people seem to be split on it (Some love it and some hate it due to glare, color problems....etc).

My budget would be around $800 (I was going to get a discount from my friend who works at Apple) but ideally if I could get a monitor for around $500 that would do the job that be would be great although I don't mind spending more for better quality.

Any input would be most welcome. :)

I guess you know that a refresh of the Pro range will take place in 2013? We do t know for sure, but I'm waiting. My ideal specs will include Thunderbolt, which would bring the TBD back into play.


If you have to buy now, many different options in your price range...Some here swear by the Dell, others like the LG range, but your budget will easily stretch to either of them. I can't recommend one or the other, as I use an iMac 27 at present....Honestly, I'd you just hang on the Pro will be a better spec machine in 7 months or so.
 
I would get the Dell u2711. It's a great 2560x1440 monitor and well priced too.
 
As much as I want to wait for next years update I need one now plus I will be getting a good discount through my friend at Apple. I can also get an Apple Display at 25% off but if it won't do the job I'd hate to spend the money and have problems.

I did look at the Dell's but again in what I have read people seem split. I guess though there will be good in bad in any product. The trick obviously is to find one with more pros than cons. Although I have read this forum for a long time and there has been some great advice given so that's what I am looking for. I appreciate the input so far!!

Some people find that Dell's anti-glare coating is too aggressive for their liking, but I think it is perfect.

It is good for its price range, but ye, it's too aggressive. Especially if you compare it with Eizo's CG.

This said, very nice price/performance ratio.

I guess your best option is to get to a store and look at them in action...The Eizo is a superb monitor, but I think it's out of your price range. Find a local supplier and test drive the monitors, it's often down to personal preference...We all have our screens setup differently, so try to get a demo where you can set things the way you like them,mthen compare.

That's like saying that this $500,000 house is not as good as the $2,500,000 house. ;)

Why would the OP need a such a high quality and colour accurate monitor as the Eizo?

Photography can mean a lot of things and one certainly does not need a $2600 monitor to do some "photography" on a computer, unless one happens to be a real professional photographer.
 
I'm pretty sure the 27 inch Apple Cinema Display is the same display as the thunderbolt.
Just different connectors.
 
I said the displays were the same, not the speed of the built in hub.

I don't know about the response times. But image quality shoul be the same.

I had the same dilemma chosing a monitor for my MP, if you could push the budget up a bit the Dell u3011 is a fantastic 30" monitor, it was worth every penny, I prefer it over apples 27" (Ive used one), My main use is for photography and design projects and the Dell fits the bill brilliantly, plus the units colour matches my dell companion 3's (silly but i have ocd when it comes to things matching :rolleyes: ). Obviously if your budget is strict and cant be pushed up a wee bit as theSeb suggested the u2711 is also a great monitor well worth looking at, your going to have to see the monitors in action before you make a final decision, good luck ;)

Notice the sarcasm smilie? I deliberately confused 2 unrelated phenomena for a laugh. It failed.
 
The NEC PA series is the current recommendation from a lot of photographers, but the 27" is above your price range. However, for a color-accurate monitor that can be calibrated, its price is reasonable.

If the original poster already has a monitor that isn't 27" and targeted at color-accurate is to perhaps go tfor the NEC PA 24" (still above $800) or PA 23" model. The PA 23" with the calibrator is about $819, which is close to the budget amount. Just may need to shuffle palettes and other non image stuff over to the other screen.

If calibrator is in different budget and/or don't have an alternative screen then not so good of an option.

Given the $800 budget may just have to tweak workspace to deal with Apple's monitor's glossy properties. There are newer calibrators that can deal with glossy and matte screens while adjusting to local ambient context.

Have to decide if tight color calibration and accuracy is what your shooting for.

P.S. I think you will find that just about any monitor you'll find some folks who don't like it. Even the Eizo ones (if only about their price. :) ) .
