How do you plan to use MySQL? What project are you working on? What are you doing? Is your Mac pre-Intel (not that this REALLY matters, but it COULD)?

Most programmers have an inkling of why they may need a particular software package, even novice programmers.

EDIT:

Looking at the MySQL pages, it shows the following --

Code:

Hey, thanks for the reply. Its exactly what you put above that confused me and Im not sure which one to download! Im following a book "Learning PHP and MySQL" (O'Reilly).

Ive got a brand new macbook, so its intel based. I want to use apache, mysql and php for a networking website idea that I have.

Download either the X86 or Universal version...The universal will work on both powerPC and intel... the X86 is intel only.... the only difference is file size..

One of theese:

EDIT:

Don't howerver plan to use this to serve your website once its done... only use it too make it... The macBook and your internet is by no-means capable of serving pages to the world efficiently.

Do not forget to install the GUI for OS X, as it is very good and is fully integrated into Mac OSX. I think Leopard comes with MySQL, irrelevant due to you using Tiger :). Just use the command line interface (mysql), it is great and you actually type the sql so you remember it later on.

ok, I completely lost you on that last comment about the GUI etc, Im sorry! As I said Im a complete novice! Could you please explain?

Also, Ive downloaded the noted program from above but theres no pkg file for me to click on and open, what have I done wrong? Ive been looking online for the past 3 hours for some help/instruction pages already up, but Im stuck!

Im using Learning PHP and MySQL by Davis and Phillips from O'Reilly press.

I may know very little about macs and nothing programming but Im determined to learn and make my website idea a reality! One day...

Thank you everybody so far for you help!

Hey I have been coding in PHP and MySQL for a couple years and made a bunch of sites. Just find a host online with Cpanel control panel and it will have something called PHPMyAdmin in it which makes it very easy for you to use and set up MySQL databases. I use www.webhostingbuzz.com as a host and they are great, VERY cheap too.

I personally use Mamp to get Apache, PHP, and MySQL installed easily, http://www.mamp.info/en/mamp.html. I think it may be an easier option for you to try. Installing MySQL on its own then trying to make it work correctly with Apache and PHP can be a little more effort than most would like.
