Which one should I go for?

I've got some questions before i run off and by my MBP.

1) I have two alternatives to choose from. Either I go for the 2.2 MBP and upgrade to 4 Gb ram, or I go for the 2.4 version, but then i cannot afford the ram boost.

Im planning on using it for some 3D rendering, but not hardcore. Then I'll probably play some games too, but which one of my alternatives will do the most difference?

2) Is there any big difference in sharpness etc in the glossy screen compared to the matte?

Go for the memory. You will never notice a .2 GHz cpu difference.

someone that does some 3D stuff should comment on the 256 card compared to the 128 though.

...in regards to memory and CPU, definitely get the 2.2 with more memory.

I agree... the 2.2GHz is perfectly fine.

got for the 2.4 with at least 2gb of ram. You can always buy more ram later if you need it. Plus it comes with a better video card.

You can upgrade ram, you can't upgrade processor or the video card.

I totally agree. Plus, dont buy the ram from apple and in about 2 months you should be able to save enough money to upgrade the ram in your 2.4...My 2 cents

You do make a good point, but why spend money just for the sake of spending money?

We don't know Makube's financial situation, but s/he could spend $500 on upgrading processor and vram now or $200 now. S/he probably won't notice ANY difference at all. Why not save the money?

2.2 ghz should suit you fine. 2 gb of ram might even be enough. hold off on the ram upgrade for now, and buy more if you think you need it later on.

I am curious though, what games are you going to play?

Ill probably play some Oblivion, some WoW, KotOR 2 and im thinking about getting Jade Empire ( Think its called so:S)

BUT, it ISN'T CHEAPER! Buying the 2.2 with 4gbs of ram COSTS MORE!! You price up a 2.2ghz with 4gb and a 2.4 with 2gb of ram the 2.4 is cheaper

2.2 - $2,749.00
2.4 - $2,499.00

AND, with the 2.4ghz you get a 160gb HD instead of a 120gb HD, AND a 256mb video card instead of a 128mb video card.

SO, forget about 4gb of ram and stay with 2gb, it will be enough if you are not hardcore. For $250 LESS you get:

0.2ghz MORE
20gb MORE
128mb MORE

And in the future, you can always upgrade your ram. You can buy cheaper ram somewhere else and then sell the ram that came with your MBP.

Get the 2.4ghz. I makes sense. You don't sound like a person who needs 4gbs of ram, you could get more with the 2.4ghz!

Exactly. Of course you could always just buy the ram from somewhere else...but with the options OP gave, the 2.4 w/ 2 Gigs of ram is the better option IMO

I'm kind of in the same situation. My plan is to get the 2.4 standard and buy more ram later.

If you get the 2.4 with 2 gigs of ram, then buy a 4 gig kit, you can always sell the original ram that came with the computer to offset the cost of buying more ram.

Definitely get the 2.4GHz model. You can upgrade the RAM whenever you want (4GB for $259 from Crucial), but you're stuck with the processor and VRAM until you get a your next computer.
If you'll be using this MacBook Pro for 2 or 3 years (or more), in a year's time, you don't want to be wishing you chose the faster one.

I agree with those who say to get the 2.4 model. It will be able to run those 3D programs better, and if you ever need more RAM, it'll be an easy upgrade. getting 2x2GB (or does the mbp only have one 2gb stick) will be much less expensive in a year. You can upgrade the RAM in the future, but not the CPU or the video card. 2GB should be enough for you now, but the choice is yours. Both would make amazing computers!
