Hello all,, So I have the Mac book Air. M1, 1 TB 16 gigs ram 13 inch 2020

And I also have the MBP M1 500 gb and 16 gigs of ram 2021 16inch

I need to sell one 0f them, leaning toward selling the 2020 model, I can use the 16-inch with an external drive to edit my photos and emails and all that stuff, without any issues, Or sell the MBP16 with 500GB and 16 gigs of ram,

eventually, I will buy my and use an Ipad pro-M2 for editing (not now) what a good solution I don't need two of them, but I need to edit I shot a lot of film.

Also what's a better office program other than Microsoft or should I still use MS Office..

Thank you all..be safe all

IMO the question is between HD space or screen size. I lean to HD space as even with a 16" screen I would likely get an larger external monitor due to the photo editing work. So keep the 2020.

In terms of Office there are several programs available that can handle the job, Apple's solution of Keynote, Numbers, and Pages for one. I have opted to stay with the standalone version of Office (not subscription) due to familiarity, and need for compatibility with work. It is not that expensive and for my uses do not need to update that often. (just updated from Office 2011).

Sell the 2020 M1 Air. The 16 inch MBP will be better for editing photos since it's display is a Liquid Retina XDR, as well as being 1440p.

Also what's a better office program other than Microsoft or should I still use MS Office..

LibreOffice. Where paid software fails, FOSS is there to pick up the slack.

I also would go with the selling the MBA especially since you already stated that you don't mind working off a external drive (what I do with the 14" no problems here with a Samsung T7) the screen would make a better viewing experience even though I know you will be eventually move to editing off the IPP. Also with it being the 2021 model it will likely at least have one more year of updates if you plan on keeping it for years to come.

Wondering what you mean by "editing photos." Photos from what camera, how many megapixels, RAW or JPEG/HEIF, what type of edits and their purpose, how many photos edited per session, what editing software?
Agree with others that the M1 MBP should be better than M1 Air, but since you have both already I would think you know this already?
You also say "I shot a lot of film." Do you literally mean photographic film (as in silver halide emulsion), or do you mean digital videos? Editing videos is a whole other question.
Have you used and are familiar with using an iPad for editing photos? I have and do, and in my opinion it is not nearly as good as editing on a Mac, and file handling can be frustrating.
Only asking these questions to better understand your needs and expectations. But to directly answer your question: the 16" MBP would be the better one to keep, unless you need the portability of the M1 Air (such as for editing photos on location).

If all you are doing is editing iPhone photos in Mac Photos, then either will do fine, pick whichever one you prefer using.

After much research and answers the MGP even if it is only 500gig of HD, is still under warranty screen is nice and clear i will run all my photos of the ext drive and also documents. on an ext drive. the Air..1 TB seems to lag (slow down when adding files or photos, and its 6core compared to the 10 core on the MBP

Just get an external SSD to store photos. The MBP is a significantly better computer, and you'll take a bigger loss selling that vs. selling the Air, in addition to ending up with an inferior computer.

If you think you might need more than 1 TB, just keep the MBP and get a 2+ TB external SSD. But if 1 TB will be fine for you, I would look into selling both, and buying a used M1 MBP with a 1 TB SSD. That gives you the best of both worlds. By buying used you partly cancel out the depreciation hit from selling your used machines. You can get an idea of pricing by checking out all three machines on EBay and selecting "Sold Listings". That shows what they're actually going for (a used 16" M1 MBP with 16" RAM and 1 TB SSD runs ~$1500+, and with a 512 SSD ~$100 less; so for relatively little you should be able to upgrade) (if you do it on Ebay you'd need to add the seller's fee on the sale and the tax on the purchase).

If you're in the US, Craig's List is good, and typically less than EBay (so EBay might be better for selling your current Macs, while Craig's List may be better for buying a replacement). Plus with Craig's, you can inspect and test out the machine yourself. You should be able to find one in mint condition with AppleCare+, which is transferrable.

Where did you get the 1440p from? The 16" ARM MBP has 3456×2234 pixels giving you a 1728×1117 screen real estate.
…do you hear yourself? 3456x2234 greatly exceeds 2560x1440. Every app gives you the option for 1440p on the Macbook Pros.

What the hell made you think otherwise?

Exactly, it exceeds 2560x1440 by a large margin. You had, for some reason, written that it is 2560x1440.

Because in practical use it's still 1440p. That extra screen space is just for the notch area. It's the same thing with the iPhone while it's resolution is technically bigger, the content area outside of the notch and the "home swipe area" as I call it is standard resolutions supporting 1080p and for the larger phones 1440p.

This is really a stupid thing to argue about.

Sell both and buy a MBP 14 or 16 with 1tb+ of ssd if that is important to you.
Its not only the screen but the processor and graphics.
The 16” MBP comes at least with the full M1 Pro not the binned one, so better multi core, better graphics and more ram bandwidth the the M1 Air.

I have to agree with the other poster that it doesn't make sense to say the 16" MBP is practically 1440p. After you eliminate the notch band, you're left with a 3456 x 2160 (16:10) display. That's got more than twice the pixels of a 1440p (2560 x 1440, 16:9).

It's really much closer to a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160, 16:9).

Keep the pro get an external ssd for extra storage and keep using microsoft office if you already have it. I have both Apple's "replacement" office and Microsoft office and I only use microsoft... it is easy versatile and compatible with everyone we deal with on pc's.

Hey I think you might have had another option. Sell both and get a newer MBP with more storage + external. 🤷‍♂️
With any kind of content creation more storage the better.

What do you mean by cleaner? Software removal, if so use what is supplied from the vendor.

I guess not missing the winter in Canada anymore eh? Portugal is a nice place to be.

Yes, a few of us already mentioned that ;). But the OP decided to keep the MPB and go with external storage. Sounds like they decided they need more storage (4 TB) than would be affordable internally in an MBP.
