Which Optical Drive in Penryn iMac?

i bought a new iMac last week, but exchanged it for a new one tonight because of it had a bad screen... ANYWAY now that that's over with, i've noticed that my new iMac has a different optical drive than my first one.

interestingly, both iMacs were manufactured in China during week 10 of production, but they both have different drives. my first iMac had a "PIONEER" drive, and it was quiet when i would insert/eject a disc. my new iMac (which has a better screen) has an "OPTIARC" drive, and it makes a bit of noise when a disc is inserted/ejected (the noise isn't really a big deal)

is it normal for the same model iMac, especially those from the same production, to have different superdrives?

Well i bought mine last week which has excatly the same configuration as your s (my HDD is 320GB though) and it came with the same super drive as well, week 11 production.

so you have an Optiarc drive also (that kinda lightly squeels when you inser/eject discs)? or you have a Pioneer drive?

Hi,
I have the 24", 2.4GHz Al iMac with a build date of 12/17/2007. It's a Merom iMac, and it has the Optiarc drive as well. Yes indeed, it is quiet when running, but the noise is present when loading/unloading. Normal. By the way, I've read threads on here of people who think highly of the Optiarc drive, as it is a product of Sony, IIRC.

Oh yeah, to answer your question. Yes, it is normal for the same model iMacs to have parts from different vendors. For example, my model could have come with an HDD from either Hitachi, Western Digital or Seagate. Mine's Hitachi (I'm very glad of that).
