Which OS X version should I use for a database server

Hi,

Could anyone tell me which version I should use for a database server as also for a webserver. I'm switching from a Windows environment to OS X environment. I was thinking a OS X Mountain Lion shoot be ok, but why is there a server version then....

To situate things. I'm using now a base Mountain Lion Server (Mac Mini Server) as test lab (before switching to Mac Pro) with VM Ware Fusion installed. I want to setup 2 VM's, one for the central database and one for the web applications.

The database server will contain MySQL Server, the webserver Apache.

Can some one explain this to me, thanks !

Use the version that is recommend by the software you'll be running. Typically the current versions of DBMS will recommend the latest versions of the operating system.

The latest version of the OS is typically the most up to date with security patches and usually gets patched the most to address any security issues. Older operating systems drop off support pretty quickly with apple.

The "server" version of OSX is largely just some small business apps and GUI tools for some of the Unix features underneath.

For what you're doing, the regular version of Mountain Lion should be fine. It has a full BSD environment right from the start, and includes lots of server-type software like Apache, Ruby, a VPN server, and so on. Install Homebrew if you think you'll want access to more Unix apps.
