For photos...there’s no real difference between the Xs max and XR right? Which would you use tourist for photos in NYC.

Also, if my unlimited data plan is almost maxed out on ATT for the month...and I am going to NYC so I’m worried about being throttled...can I stick my Verizon sim in my IPhone Max?... it is on the apple upgrade plan. I have a feeling during the Marathon I am going to be throttled.... I was thinking the Xr battery might be handy too. I am bringing a battery pack too.

Dual sim i assume, use one for Verizon data plan?
Bring a "real" camera. They still make sense.
256GB model to store photo and some video?
I'd like having 4GB so Xs or Max.
AT&T now supports eSIM too.

Not bringing a real camera. Going to be walking all over for like 12 hours a day some in the rain. I am not planning to carry a camera too. I have two carry two phones already.

But one is an e sim...and I thought it wasn’t actually allowed to be used yet right?

"Real" cameras are nice, but as they say: the best camera is the one you have with you. If you can't (or don't want to) carry around another device, then naturally you want the best phone camera you can get.

The XR & XS will produce identical photos in most cases. The XR's single camera is identical to the wide-angle camera on the XS. Most of your shots will be taken with that lens (especially, I'd imagine, while sightseeing). The other camera on the XS is a telephoto, allowing you to zoom in without any loss of quality (you can use digital zoom on the wide-angle lens, but it will look like crap). Also, the XS uses both cameras to produce portrait mode shots. The XR does offer a limited portrait mode, which only works on human faces. The two lenses on the XS should produce superior portrait shots compared to the XR.

tl;dr - the XS will give you better zoomed & portrait mode shots. All other shots will be identical.
