Just got a new MBP 13” it has 10.14.5 Mojave out of the box. Checked for updates and it shows Catalina 10.15.1 but has 10.14.6 as another update available. which should I update first? can I directly update to 10.15.1?

You can upgrade directly to Catalina 10.15.1, but my opinion is that you would better update to Mojave 10.14.6.

Welcome to MacRumors.

If you're willing to deal with some of the bugs and issues Catalina has, you can update straight to it no problem. But it might be wise to just update to 10.14.6, as it is a mature and stable OS that works fine.
