So today, I tried out the iPad (I'm in the UK and a local from where I live has one) and I absolutely love it and instead of going for a 13" MBP, I think I'll go for a nice iMac. Trouble is, I'm not sure what size screen to get. It'll either be the higher end 21.5" model, or the base 27" model. The computer will be around 75-90cm away from my face as well, and I'm pretty sure the actual computer will be able to sit on my desk.

I don't NEED this screen but should I still get it because it's bigger?

The depends on what is more important to you: screen real estate or raw power.

If you work on photos a lot the larger screen will be the best bet seeing as you can work on bigger photos much easier, but if you plan on doing video work it might pay off to go for the more powerful hardware to decrease your render times.

Thanks for the replies, but I am definitely not a power user, more of a media consumer user. The base 21.5" model will actually do for me, but I'm thinking of the higher 21.5" since it's just that little bit future proof. I had a look in the store today and the 27" is just absolutely glorious to look at! The 21.5" model just seems alright in the store...

The 27" is nice because you can fit a 720p movie on 1/4th of the screen while having 1/2 of the screen for a web browser... then another 1/4th of the screen for IM/IRC windows. Mmm, productivity. That's what I like it for, anyway.

That'd be nice to have and all, but the cost of it >_< I'd like to get an iPad ASAP as well :3

Edit: Oooh, that'd be VERY nice to have..Maybe I should just wait and save a bit more for that 27" model. I'm sure I could get the money.

Don't get the high-end 21.5", it's waste of money. Either get the base 21.5" or 27" (I would get the i5). You're wanting it to last so it's not time to bitch about money

I wouldn't get iPad yet, 2nd gen will always bring some nice features, just like iPhone 2G to 3G

Just wondering, why do you think it's a waste of money?

I personally don't think it's a waste. You're paying $300 for twice as much hard drive space and four times better graphics performance. But I'd still say wait until they are refreshed if you plan on getting anything other than the i5/i7 27-inch.

If you're not playing any games, you're paying 300$ for something that you'll never use. 9400M is fine for general use, 4670 won't show its power in other than games

I understand what you mean..I wished the 27" model came with the base specs, yet that'll never happen. >_<

I have eagerly awaited the iMac refresh and now that it has happened I am about to buy my first Mac. I've been using a 17" DTR-laptop for years now and need something more powerful and stable. I think iMac is the perfect computer for me. I do have experience with Macs as I got my mom a Mac Mini with a 21.5" display (which I'm using now).

But what size should I get? I have seen both sizes live and my impressions were that the iMac 27" looks very cool but takes a lot of space (especially width) while the 21.5" model looks okey but for some reason smaller than this 21.5" display I'm using now. However, standing in front of these iMacs isn't the same thing as using them at home and so I would like user feedback from you.

My desk

It's a bulky wooden four-seater that acts as my livingroom table as well (I live in a studio apartment). One fourth of it is currently occupied by my laptop and active speakers. An iMac 21.5" would fit nicely on it while the 27" model, because of its width, would take up almost half of the width of the table.

Viewing distance

I prefer to watch monitors from fairly close. I'd say my optimal viewing distance is an arm's length. Because of my desk acting as a livingroom table as well, I have no option to place the iMac further away from me.

Usage of screen space

I do get that a bigger screen is better when you edit video or audio, or if you have to do some professional work. However, I'm a university student that only 'professionally' writes with Word. I usually have Spotify, 1-3 Firefox windows and maybe MSN Messenger/Thunderbird on at the same time. Sometimes I do have situations where I need to see 2 windows at the same time. I don't do gaming at all and as I have a 40" display in the same room (with a BD player) I'm not going to watch movies with the iMac. I'd say I usually do light multitasking but not a lot.

Overall

I'm going to buy the iMac with a student discount. Right now, I have two options: 1) the new 21.5" iMac with the i5 (dual core) option or 2) the new 27" iMac with the i5 (dual core) option. I'm not going to buy another computer for at least five years so that's why I'm going with the better cpu -- I know you guys are quad core -fans but as I'm not using any pro programs, I doubt I have use for it.

My gut feeling is that while the 27" iMac would be nice for my light multitasking, the physical space it takes would be a nuisance. Furthermore, it would probably feel like I chose it because everyone thinks it's so cool. Of course the fact that 27" models have had more widespread problems with the yellow tint and the noise (maybe due to using so powerful components in a thin and small chassis) makes the 21.5" model seem like a safer choice. Being ecofriendly and strict about power consumption, the smaller iMac feels a better bet.

So what I'm basically asking here is for the owners of both sizes come clean about what it's like to use them in their basic use (not photo editing or such). One thing to think about is how 27" resolution makes everything very small -- or so I've heard. I know I'm going to get some 'the bigger, the better' comments, but I beg to remember that not everyone thinks that way. I know you get used to displays that seem big at first. On the other hand, some of you seem to be of the opinion that a 50" display placed on the desk wouldn't be an overkill. At that point it is clear that we are not living on the same planet. :D

I recently went to the Apple store to look at iMacs, and thought the 21.5 inch was alot larger than I expected.

For me, the 21.5 inch is large enough and I don't see the reason people want the monster of a 27 inch. Maybe if you want to use it as a TV too, then it would be good. If you are just using it sitting at a desk, 21.5 inch is perfectly large enough and I wouldn't go beyond that.

quad core, hyperthreading,2560-1440 res :D

The size of the 27'' is a little intimidating at first. However, after using it a few days, it is a thing of beauty. The worst part about it is getting used to the high resolution, which only takes a few hours.

In all my years of computing (20+), sometimes I've wanted more CPU power but not very often. The one thing I have always wanted on every computer is more screen real estate.

I am using 2 1680x1050 monitors now and it's not enough. I would fill up 4 of them.

However, a 21" monitor is still pretty damn big. For example in a small dorm room with a roomie anything bigger would be a nuisance.
