What's Your Favorite Posish
I'm STILL waiting for my InteliMac (Not as bad as some people that still have another month to wait i suppose!) But have heard the speakers are not as loud as on the G5 iMac (and they were not great) so I would like some new ones.

I want really crisp sound, not necessarily the loudest speaker but something that can kick but quality and style are more important that shear volume. Like most Mac users i want something that looks good aswell as sounds good.

I LOVE the look of These AltecLansing FX6021's But the reviews havent been very good on them.

Most of the other speakers look really poor - can anyone give me some advice - im not that keen on soundsticks - ive had them before and i liked the sound quality but not the look

thanks in advance

What's your budget?

A lot will depend on how much you want to spend, but you can still get reasonable speakers at good prices, depending on what you're looking for.

The JBL creatures are excellent value for money. Great sound quality and they look great too. The white ones are my favourite, though they tend to be harder to get hold of compared to the grey ones...

The Harmon Kardon soundstick's are nice too, and you could have saved some money if you had ordered with your mac, they have a special on at the moment..

Of course if your room has a 5.1 surround setup you can always by a long optical cable with a 3mm toslink adapter and hook up your new mac to that..

once again, i will go with the JBL creatures. cheap, loud, clear, look nice, good bass, what more do you want?

If you're not really on a budget, and don't mind spending a little bit more than some of the sets out there, I'd check out the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers/subwoofer. These sound amazing and are worth the extra cost.

EDIT: I didn't see that you were looking at those Altec Lansing's, so even then, I'd go with these and save the extra $100.

I personally really like my harman kardon soundsticks. They give really great sound, they glow, and amazon sells them for $120.
I agree, but mine do not glow...if yours do I'm bummed!

PS: You can get them for <$100 reconditioned from Harman Kardon.

Also, the ProMedias mentioned above are great.

AE Aego M

Hello BakedBeans.

If you are looking for an active 2.1 set, which is stylish and most probably the best value out there (only 99 pounds!) at the moment, I suggest you take a hard look at newly released Acoustic Energy Aego M system. As you live in England, it will even be easy to find these since AE is an English hi-fi company. They received 5 out of 5 stars rating in the January ('06) issue of What Hi-Fi magazine, so I assume (boldly) they sound better than "ordinary" 2.1 sets. I still have not had a chance to listen to them personally, but I believe they are worth testing.

I hope this helped.

Thanks everyone - and thanks magic, i took a look and they are more stylish than the (ugly in my opinion) creatures.

Im really leaning toward the altec ones - more on style than anything else.

Altec Lansing FX-6021 all the way. I have an old set of speakers circa 1999 on my old school Dell and they still sound great. Plus these new ones look awesome compared to other speaker sets.

Another vote for the Harmon Kardon SoundSticks II. They have more in common with audiophile quality speakers than with computer speakers. I would say calling them "computer speakers" would be an insult. But you should audition your top choices and make your own decision. Speakers are very subjective.

I vote for the Logitech Z-5500. Awesome setup that sound incredible and leaves you more options in the long run. Besides that it is not that much more money and it sure gives the Creatures a run for quality.

Thanks for all your help - Its narrowed down to Altec 6021's and the Soundstick 2.

The Altecs Lansing because they look just STUNNING and the soundsticks because I know they sound GREAT and look OK

If somebody can tell me that the FX6021's sound as good as the soundsticks i will get them.

The FX6021's rock! (literally vibrate part of house).

I can rock my house with these little guys on half volume. But they are not practical for somone who just needs computer speakers.

I'm really satisfied with Logitech's Z-2300, the 2.1 version. They sound great, and can still put out volume.

Logitech

I must say, I love my little logitech Z-340 speakers ( http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=109395 ) Don't let these little guys fool you, they really do kick a$$. Small, but I've been real pleased w/them. Both for gaming, and playing loud music at the end of the day;) Might check around at some of the reviews out there, they're a nice set of speakers for a pretty good price. The only complaint (and i think i saw someone else complain about this at amazon) is that the light is bright. I mean I like lights everywhere, it looks cool, but its like a flashlight shining at you! I took a sharpy and "blacked" it out.

My vote is for the Soundsticks, without hesitation.
They look very good (though I wish they didn't have the grilles), and sound incredible for less than $150. I am also a big fan of the subwoofer. It looks cool, glows, and is one of the best 6" (I think) I've ever heard. I can vibrate cabinets 2 rooms away, and that's without any help from the iTunes equalizer.
