Have a 10.5” pro 256Gb at moment. All is fine with it. Space wise I keep a lot of videos from iTunes movies on it just in case. Doesn’t really come out of house though, so use on holiday now and then.

It’s used for a bit of everything, browsing, Apple music, iCloud photos (current library is 1.2Tb although use the optimise), have 2Tb iCloud option, games, apps etc. Hardly use my MBP now.

Just fancy an upgrade, not too bothered if it’s a pro as not sure I need or use the pro bits - whatever they are.

Only want the 11/10.9” not the larger iPad as prefer a bit of portability.

So what do I get….
2020 iPad Pro 128Gb £595
iPad Air 256Gb £630
2021 M1 128Gb £711

These are with some discounts that I can get. More storage is better obviously just not sure though.

£81 - £116 is a minimal amount of extra money to spend on a clearly vastly superior product. for me it’s a no brainier when laid out as you have.
That said, if an air is good enough, perhaps you should get that, save that bit of cash and buy case for it or something.

Agree but it’s also 128Gb less, so it’s not just the price difference but also the big storage difference which for future proofing would be good. So although it’s £81 difference I agree, but unsure on storage.

I think the M1 will be a beast unless it’s throttled a bit for iPad compared to MacBook’s, so should be future proof for a long time

Personally, Air 4 256GB but I'm a storage nut and I already know 128GB would be uncomfortable (too much storage management required).

I don't store videos or music on my 256GB Air 3 and it's at 200GB used. Mostly Japanese manga including perennial favorites.

The 12.9 512GB, I do use for videos and it looks like that one only has 7% free space at the moment (whoops).

Just keep your existing iPad until you're unhappy with it.

The iPad Pro 11" is a fine machine and would serve you will for many years. I would get it over the others.

I'm upgrading from an eight mo old 2020 11" so I understand the itch. :)
If you don't need the storage, I would get the 2021.

Are you upgrading then? If so how are you keeping your current? Are you going to do an Apple trade in or private sale? Not sure how much my 10.5” 256Gb is worth.

I’m just not sure on the storage, 256Gb is plenty, 128Gb unsure….suppose could start afresh as a lot of stuff on probably not used. Actually just looked and there is a lot of media on I’ve downloaded, as in iTunes movies with are huge.

Maybe I could get by with 128Gb and just download less, as only need that option when on holiday anyway.

Maybe the M1 is the way to go, I imagine it will be a lot lot faster and future proof. Not sure on comparison with M1 Mac, if they throttle it or anything.

Back to my itch….

Think the 2020 Pro is now out as rather go for the Air 4 or the 2021 Pro.

They roughly work out the same price for the Air 4 256Gb and the Pro 128Gb, within £30 anyway.

At the moment I can also trade in my current 10.5 Pro 256Gb, with a deal, and get £255 trade in for it, is that a decent trade in deal? Would mean around a £460 for upgrade in total.

Looking at specs closer it seems the Air 4 has 4Gb RAM, and the Pro 8Gb RAM so much better on the Pro.

I think I’d prefer TouchID, but having never used FaceID on an iPad (have on iPhone’s), how do they work in practice? I think it detects in portrait or landscape, does it pick this up well? Does it have to be the right way up, or can you pick up the iPad any way and it still unlocks?

Has anyone had a similar decision, and which did you go with in the end and why.

Thanks

Any orientation is fine. Well, I haven’t tried upside-down but right side up and either side on landscape works fine.

Caveat, holding my new FaceID in landscape, I’m always getting a Camera Covered message when I’m holding the iPad and often, the angle I’m using it while lying down in bed is wrong so I have to lift up the iPad so it can capture my face.
