I'm looking for a wireless router I can stuff in my bag, and use to plug into family or friends' wired networks. And it doesn't look like there are any compact 802.11n routers yet. So I'm looking for something like the airport express, but with better signal strength. I've had one before and it provided very poor coverage for my place, so I'm ruling it out. I've seen a similarly sized unit from linksys (WTR54GS). Anybody have one of these? Are there alternatives?

i have a linksys wrt54gc
its a small square, and can fit into your butt pocket.
however, if you plan on modding it like installing DD-WRT, look elsewhere. the Linksys has 1mb of ram...incapable of installing an alternative firmware.
Or, you can go to FON.com and request a free fonera router. THey usually have promotions during major holidays. Look how to install DD-WRT on that by googling. That thing can reside completely in your hand. (its small...very small). Its a G router. I have one and converted it to DD-WRT...its the best thing i've done with the fonera.

excellent idea. i just saw the meraki mesh router and was considering $50 for that, but you just can't beat $FREE. just ordered myself one. and when apple finally ships an 802.11n airport express, i won't feel guilty buying one.
Who what where when how did you come up with Apple Express Airport going to N standard?
It seems logical (and quite probable) that someday apple will ship an airport express that supports the N standard... whether that day is next tuesday or next year nobody knows.

either two things will happen with the Airport Express.
1. discontinued.
2. updated (which would include the N standard).
why? because once all macs are using N standard, and since the Airport Extreme is pre-N, it will happen. trust me.
one of the two are inevitable, but who knows when it will happen.
as for the original topic, personally my first choice would be the Express, if only because of how compact it is, the other options seem a bit bulky in comparison.
personally i'd give it another try, since you won't be using it exclusively in your place. but thats me.
