Hey,

So my wife started talking about wanting an iPad for traveling, mostly to watch movies but also writing the occasional Mail or an invoice from the go. She’s a wedding photographer so she needs to travel quite a bit. She currently still owns a 13“ intel mpb from 2017 which I suggested to sell (for 200€?). She does her editing on my m1max while I’m at the office..
I’m wondering what maybe older iPad model still makes sense as a refurbished option maybe - it would have to have an attachable keyboard for the writing stuff..
Any thoughts? Maybe to swap the 2017 MacBook for the iPad, cause that machine can’t really do anything else than the iPad but is bulky and slow.

If you don't need a lot of storage and M1 iPad Air or maybe an M1 iPad Pro (128GB storage is not bad - 64GB is low but can be workable if you don't plan to install too many games / download too many movies)

To watch movies the Pro will be nicer because of the mini LED.

I personally would not go to an older Ax chip at this point (also because they have lower memory).

Make sure she's good with whatever storage option you get her. As she's a wedding photographer, she's likely using up a lot of storage space, even if it's only temporarily. 128GB may very easily fill up pretty quickly with photos and downloaded videos, apps, etc. Photos can be offloaded to a external USB drive though.

You've mentioned invoicing as well. There's lots of invoice apps out there, I'd recommend Quickbooks Online. I've used it on an iPad in the past and worked fine in my tests. There's likely free or cheaper options as well.

With that said, I'd recommend at least a 12.9" M1 iPad Pro (this was my main and preferred device for a couple years before getting a MacBook Air). The mini LED screen will likely play a big part in her photography business. She can use it to show clients her work. While not as nice as the M4's OLED screen, it should get the job done well enough.

The above recommendations are good, M1 or higher.
I got myself a Logitech combo touch (detachable keyboard) but that also protects the device when chucking it in the bag. Its a bit cheaper than the original keyboard but still good quality.

But at the same time, if she's used to a mac and happy with that GUI, why not get a new mac instead that she also can edit on? Maybe you can find a M1 Macbook air? Size and weight are lower than an iPad with a keyboard.

My wife got my M1 12.9 & MKB when I upgraded to the M4 13" and she loves it, especially for email, web surfing, and watching shows & movies.

Maybe a refurb M1 ipad air or older pro? sometimes they come up with 512 gb storage for descent money.
