This isn't about help with the install process, WGA or how to fix anything. It's an opinion thread. Computer involved is a Mac Pro quad 2.66 (2009) with the GT120 (which I'll upgrade to the 4870 in due course) and 6GB RAM.

I have a professional disdain for Windows but want to install it, and would like affirmation that I'm picking the right one. This is partly for work use when I'm testing Windows apps we've produced (20%) and gaming via dual boot (80%). I'll mostly be running OSX though.

My options are:

Windows XP Home (I already have a slipstreamed version I made when I had to install it on my laptop which has since been decommissioned). This is mine so I can use it forever. However, it's also lame because it can't detect half my hardware from what I can tell from previous posts.

Windows 7 RC (64 bit). Because everyone's doing it. And because I should be able to get more out of my hardware from what I understand.

I'd like Vista 64 ideally but I don't have it, and it feels like a bad time to be buying it IYSWIM.

I'm going to install on a dedicated 80GB drive to keep it completely separate from my OSX stuff. I thought about partitioning 30GB for XP Home, for Parallels and simple things, then using the rest for Windows 7 RC. When the RC expires I can go back to only having one install temporarily and then buy the best version of Windows 7 (assuming I like it). I only have version 3.0 of Parallels, hence being slightly afraid of installing Windows 7 RC alone as they don't seem to want to support it without me moving to 4.0. Should I just go for it anyway?

If anyone has any opinions on my proposed partition sizes along the lines of, "Whoa, that's way too small for that OS", that is useful to know.

Does my plan sound sensible?

Thank you

I have a similar setup to the one you describe. I keep 30 gigs for a non-boot camp parallels XP boot, for running any applications that don't have an OS X equivalent. And I keep a 60 gig boot camp partition for Win7x64, for gaming. I find myself booting less and less into windows as I don't game as much as I used to and am quite happy with the 30 gig XP install.

I wouldn't use Vista or 7 with parallels/vmware because they still don't support Aero AFAIK and ends up needing more than 1 gig of ram to run smooth. However, I assume these apps you are producing should work well with XP, Vista, and 7. IIRC 7 is very similar to Vista so with those two boots, you should have a decent testing environment.

Thank you, I'm not too worried about Vista for the testing as I have a desktop PC which runs that so for the testing side the other two are more valuable to me. Your experience as someone who has already carried out my plan is very helpful. It's sounding like a good idea now and not just something crazy :)
