Which Was The Best PhotShop?

I fought with PhotShop so I can't say it was best

PhatShop on the other hand was phat.

PhitShop didn't fit on my hard drive, but I liked the exercise program.

I didn't think much of ThotShop and PhlotShip didn't float my boat either.

BUT - I buy all my 70's hair band memorabilia at TotoShop

What were we talking about again?

The best Photoshop was the one were you first thought 'Yeah, now I've got the hang of this'.

So for me, Photoshop 4, where layers were first introduced (I think) was pretty cool. Version 6 where they introduced the top toolbar was also one I remember fondly.

But to be honest, I find it difficult to keep up with all the new features that are introduced with each version. Too busy at work to set aside time for familiarising myself with new software which is a shame.

Also, it seems to me that it's only rarely that new features come along that are earth-shattering. Layers, masks etc to me were far more fundamentally important than the healing brush — but then I don't do a lot of retouching.

ah yes, layers! and the whole history-undo thing! and the multiply blending mode! (when did they put that in there?? I'm sure it was there for ages before somebody taught me about it)

When I was shown 6, I was pissed. I felt like everything was moved or locked down. Reminded me of moving form C++ to Java *shudder*.
 
I'm not sure what the best is, but CS2 doesn't seem to be worth the upgrade price to me, so I'm sticking with CS until either I need CS2 or some reason, or more likely I'll be getting the upgrade version after CS2.
 
Layers were introduced in Photoshop 3.0, I believe, and I could probably still get a lot done with that today. After version 4 or so, the bloat started creeping up and continues today. Last year I had to do some emergency work on Photoshop 5.0 running on an old Vaio with Windoze 98. The laptop sucked, but it was actually ok, the work got done just fine.

I have Photoshop CS but to do fast-n-easy bitmap-image editing (e.g., creating custom icons for a FileMaker db, color-correcting scans of the old family slides) I'll cue up Classic environment to run Photoshop 3 instead.

I understand that there are a lot of under-the-hood professional reasons for preferring more modern Photoshop (how it handles color, etc) but GUI-wise I hate working in CS (or PS 7 before it). I feel like I'm wrestling with Photoshop instead of getting work done. Even the fancy text features more often leave me frustrated than impressed.
 
After having used each version since 5.5 I have to vote for CS2. While others have mentioned 7 which was without a doubt one of the biggest improvments over an earlier version, particularly with the introduction of the healing brush which is one of my favorite tools. CS2 fixed most of the quirks the Healing Brush had and it is a really powerful and polished tool.

edit: The biggest improvments comment is from my experience. I didn't use PS durring the introduction of layers which I can imagine really revolutionized the way people started working with PS.

What version did Adjustment layers get introduced? I didn't really find out how powerful and helpful they are until I tried them in 7.
 
Can't imagine life without Adjustment Layers at all... can't remember what version they turned up in.

Absolute godsend.


Edit: A colleague reckons version 5...
 
I say PS7. Because that was what I first started out with in a more professional/college way then just playing around like I did in High school. I think that 7 was the last version where you could scan money w/o any problems.
 
If you're talking about all-time, it would be Photoshop 3.0, which introduced layers. :eek: Before 3.0, you'd been considered a pro if you knew how to 'chop' your images. :D

Version 4.0 introduced adjustment layers, yet another great innovation that's hard to dismiss.

The best Photoshop version is obviously the latest. I loves me CS 2. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

My vote is for Photoshop 7, or perhaps CS.

I'd still be using one of those, but the lack of complete RAW file support has forced me to use CS2, which I find to be slower and more bloated than earlier versions. :mad:
