Hello all, I read lots of wireless router threads here, and I learned that Linksys routers are highly recommended, but I was hoping that I could (please:)) get some specific advice.

I was thinking of buying one of the following, and I was hoping that you could help me choose. I am planning on buying a laptop next month, and I would like a desktop that I currently own to also be connected to the router. The reason why I would like to buy now, is because all of the back-to-school sales are going on, and I'd like to advantage of them :)

-Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router - WRT54G $60 CAD

-Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router - WRT54GC $30 CAD

-D-link Wireless G Router $35 CAD

I was initially leaning toward the $30 CAD Linksys router, but the WRT54G seems to have better encryption. I'm wondering if it's worth it, though.

The router that I currently own is a Linksys (wired,) and it often drops the connection when my brother is gaming online. I'm hoping that won't be a problem with the new router.

Any votes/suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance :D

Linksys WRT54GL.

Since Linksys altered their line after series 4, the L does make a difference. Definitely worth it if you like to have complete control over your router.

Anything but Linksys should work well, though I wouldn't put too much faith in Belkin either.

linksys works great in my house. 3 laptops and a desktop and no problems at all (my blackbook, the rest all PCs).

had a belkin before it and that thing was alright, but sometimes dropped randomly and would need to be reset each morning.. quite annoying after a while.

Yeah i wouldnt recommend any of those nightmares

i got the Airport Extreme Base Station the big one not the Express and it has worked flawlessly
go check it out on the apple store its delayed 1-3 weeks

i smell video streaming tomorrow

no one ever buys the base station except for us hardcore freaks and schools
Delayed.....just dosent make any sense....or does it?

I've got the Linksys WRT54G and it works really well. Had a Belkin before that and it was kinda crappy although it was one of the first wireless routers out there.

The Linksys control panel is great and the router has just about every feature I'd ever need. Port forwarding is really easy if you need that for anything and it supports a ton of wireless security modes.

It also works great with my AirPort Express

If you can afford to drop the extra cash, get the Apple basestation. I personally don't think they are worth the price though.

A friend bought the WRT54G and it was a pain to install. She keeps calling me because her connection drops.

It is cheaper than the Airport Express, and also have the built-in switch, but the Airport Express is easier to install and more reliable.

Linksys sucks... I've gone through two of them and they consistently had problems. The D-Link is more reliable but it has a nightmarish setup panel... I really hate it. The Linksys was at least easy to setup.

I'd go Apple Base Station but might be a bit on the pricey side. I got a Linksys G router for like $20USD... it's serving me well.

For those who bought it, does the airport express work with PC's as well? I'm going to have a mac and my girl's PC so I need something that can pull double duty.

Thanks!

no reason why it shouldnt and plus with an airport you get wireless printing over usb it is sweet

Linksys WRT54G

Bought one a couple weeks ago. Took me 20 minutes to set up, one wired and one wireless computer with security settings etc.

The signal is OK where I use my laptop, two rooms away. It has dropped the signal a couple times but comes back in a few minutes.

For the price I think this is an excellent router.

WRT54G ver. 3. :p Easy to upgrade the firmware and few problems (though at the moment running a tad bit slow but then, I'm outside on my laptop and the router is inside the apartment building).

I have a Linksys 54G, Ver 6. It is not as good aparently as the older 54G (version 4 and earlier). Folks like that as they can load different firmware. Not sure what that does really. The 54G seems to be working good for me. I do have some instances where the speed drops for no particular reason as the router stays in the same place and I use the notebook only while seated in my LazyBoy with an adult beverage. But after a few minutes, it comes back to full speed. Strange, but it is otherwise stable and reliable.

Thanks to everyone who voted or gave me suggestions, I really appreciate it:)

I decided to go with the WRT54G, because it seemed to be highly recommended here, as well as in the broad internet community.

This may be such a nub-cake question, but can an iMac connect wirelessly with a Linksys WRT54G? Or do you HAVE to buy Express or Base?

EDIT: NVM, my ignorance was replaced by a quick look at Apple.com
