White C2D iMac 24" - Broken USB Bus? :/

Hi all,

I've got a White iMac (purchased April 07) and I've had a problem with it for a while now.

Basically I think the USB bus on the rear (3x usb slots) may be 'broken'. Let me give you a few examples:

- Plugging in my iPhone 3g or iPod Nano (latest, 16gb) - takes the mac about 5-10 mins to 'discover' the device -- it will only sync, not power it.

- When the iphone does connect, I get a 'warning' message on the iphone telling me it isnt compatible with the device.

- Backing up via Time Machine: Tried it with my existing external USB drive, and a brand new one, Today for example, I started backing up about 6 hours ago -- it currently says "16.38 GB of 197.47 GB" -- so its taken 6 hours to do 16GB :/

- I used to get those usb over current notices, even if nothing was plugged in -- This stopped when I upgraded to snow leopard.

I've tried SMC (?) resets, OS reinstalls, etc...the problem just wont go away :/

My AppleCare runs out on April 2nd -- should I just book it in?

Call it in. It sounds like a blown fuse on the USB.

Is it a fairly simple fuse replacement, or a complete logic board replacement? Really just wondering if it would be worth dropping it in to an Apple store one morning, and collecting it in the evening (did this for a hard drive failure on the same iMac about 3 months ago!).

I've books an appointment at the genius bar tomorrow to see if they can figure out what's wrong. The AppleCare guy on the phone thinks the logic board needs replacing because of a fried USB bus, although my iSight and Bluetooth (which apparently run via an internal USB bus) are not affected.

I can only hope they figure out what's up, or offer a new logic board!

You're under Applecare....don't be so worried (unless you poured water in the machine)...it'll get taken care of.

Took it into the local Apple shop and spoke to a nice guy there. He booted it up and was presented with the 'USB Overcurrent' notice (even though nothing was plugged in) and then proceeded to try plugging in a Lacie USB drive with a label on it that said 'NVIDIA GFX TEST' but the system refused to even recognize it.

So, he took it in for repair. Said it would take up to 14 days and that it would get a whole new logic/mother board

So, I've got the MBP hooked up to the other 24" Samsung monitor now...looks a little weird without it now though

Its been 14 days and have heard nothing from Apple :/

Anyone else had a logic/motherboard replacement thats taken over 14 days (When sent in via an Apple store)?

Are you afraid to use the phone? Start bugging the Apple store about its whereabouts.
