White Macbook Discoloration (and other problem)

I have had my macbook for about 9 months now and have been experiencing a few problems with it. One problem is the discoloration on the back of the monitor near the heat vents. It looks like the heat has affected the color and now it constantly looks like there is dirt on it. The other problem that I have been experiencing is that the edges of my macbook on the right and left of the keyboard are starting to splinter off. I thought I only had a one time occurence when a piece of the white plastic came off on the left but just tonight on the right side of the keyboard another piece of the plastic splintered. Are these defects covered by applecare? It seems as though everything internally is good to go but I need a new case for my macbook.

Not sure about the marks around the vents, but I'm pretty sure that others have had their macbooks fixed after the pieces splintered off. Mine hasn't had that problem, but that's because I carefully close the lid. If you close the lid by slamming it shut (which most people do), it can damage the thin plastic when the lugs on the screen hit. I generally advise people I know who get macbooks to close the lid carefully so that this doesn't happen. Mine has shiny marks there, but it hasn't cracked yet.

I hardly ever close the lid on my macbook. It sits around my house all day opened up so only when taking it out of the house or on trips do I even close the macbook. I hope apple will take care of me. I need to find an apple store near my house. Do they do the work there in house?

To be honest, I don't think either is covered under Applecare as I suspect Apple would argue that this is cosmetic damage (according to some forum posters, the company has said this about splintering problem).

BUT:

With the splintering problem (and I would have a look at the fairly recent threads about this), Apple have replaced the plastic casing affected - so I think you would be okay about that. BTW Apple change the magnets (I believe) which act as the latch, to less powerful - this might be the reason for the splintering, or it could be a flaw caused by the plastic injecting moulding process - the latter happens in products by other maunfacturers; I don't buy the argument that the users have closed the lid too firmly.

As for the discolouration problem - sorry but I'm not going to be too much help on this! I really can't remember seeing this problem - but I would do a google search and a search at Macintouch.com - if it has happened to more than a few people, you'll find out.

Also, if Apple aren't willing to fix it, try and get an explanation - if it has been caused by heat that sounds like something isn't right there.
