A friend was lent/given a White MacBook 2.0 C2D 80GB by her research mentor/boss that was purchased new in April '07 and barely used.

The previous user basically turned it on, looked around, and turned it off. He mentioned it he was having some problems with the laptop battery, but was unsure what was up and didn't have the time or need to mess with it.

Anyway, I have not had a chance to use/look at the computer myself, but my friend (who is new to Macs) is having a couple of problems with it. The computer seems to work, but:

1. Cooling fan makes A LOT of noise -- worse when she has a CD in the drive.
2. The battery won't charge -- at all. She tells me that over the battery indicator, an "X" is displayed over the battery. She actually had the thing plugged in for over week to try and let it charge, but still no change. She has pulled out and reinstalled the battery as well -- no help.

Were either of these problems with that generation White MacBook that were well known? Anyone have any idea what might be going on?

Should she just take it to an Apple Store to have it looked at, and if so, what might that cost her (she doesn't have the original purchase receipt -- bought off a research grant through a University so I'm not sure there is a clear "proof of purchase")? Since the thing was bought in April is there still some limited warranty left on it (don't think the original owner got Apple Care for it).

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks. Obviously, without looking at the system myself it's hard to tell where the sound is coming from.

As far as the battery goes -- guess I should just tell her to take it to the Apple Store to have it looked at, huh?
