White screen of death?

HEY GUYS!

I've had my macair for JUST over a year and its stuffed up outside of warranty..wtf?
haha life is life.
Anyways,
When i turn on my mba it's stuck on the white screen (or grey?) and it doesn't go any further. I've tried everything i could find on the net and from the research it seems that i'm experiencing some hard drive problems? Is this true?
My mba is a rev.2 with an hdd. If my hard drive is the core of the problem i'm going to take this opportunity to upgrade it with guides from the net to an ssd. My good friend has advised me that there will be no side effects, so that aside, would anyone happen to know the model no.s of the samsung ssd used in the macbook airs?

Normally when there's a hard drive issue it will give you a folder icon with question mark.

Have you tried to reset it at all?

yes, i've tried all that. Tried pressing the various keys that give you the options and things to reset other things lol..as you can see i'm not too fond on what they are but I have followed the various steps to try and reset every possible thing

In reference to your folder icon with question mark statement, I don't have that..what happens is that it's stuck on the white screen with the grey apple icon in the centre and the circle made up of lines that continually circles and never stops. Nothing happens from then onwards, someone please help? I don't want to fork out 250$ to buy a ssd and then realise that the hdd wasn't the main cause of the problem!

I.E resetting ram, booting in safe mode all of that don't work. I've got a hunch that the osx partition might be the problem. If so, if i was to purchase a superdrive would it function even if the laptop doesn't enter the os?
